Unless you are doing all this for learning purposes, by this time this disinfection effort has become an incredible waste of time (actually, quite a while ago). Your system is simply messed up beyond repair, go and reinstall it.

This is the consistent error, have you used a programme that changes icons at any stage ?

Go to start > All Programs > Accessories >
When the prompt opens type the following bolded text and press enter

sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)

On completion reboot

i found the command prompt under accessories and ran that command. it took awhile, and upon reboot the font is much bigger and the screen is scrolling slower (sort of like safe mode). do i need to system restore, or am i ok?

Did it ask for the cd at any stage or inform you of file changes ?

It appears to have reset the resolution to default

I will go and flash up my XP VM to refresh my self on how to change it

Reinstalling the VGA drivers should be good to go. I can provide screenshot for XP otherwise on resolution etc. settings in XP.

LOL.  ;D Just get something that provides snapshots functionality, saves a lot of time.  ;)

@OP: Download the latest drivers for you graphics card and install those, then reboot. If you still have bad resolution/big fonts, I will post the screenshots.

thanks guys. actually, before i read your reply (essexboy), i did system restore back to last night. all is perfect with my resolution. however, if i run the sfc /scannow in the run box, where i was originally supposed to (instead of the command prompt box at c:\documentsandsettings\) which is where i ran it earlier, will i get the same result regarding my resolution and the scan itself?

You can just redo the sfc /scannow thing again since you have effectively undone that. Do not use system restore on infected boxes.

per essexboy, the infection has been gone for days (or i would not have used systerm restore). as far as i know, we are now just trying to deal with any after effects of the infection.

That was a clean restore point created after the malware removal

So any problems now are purely of the repair sort...  Lets run for 24 hours without doing anything further and see what problems may surface, the BSOD may well have just been a one off quirk

Edit : My xp is now clean again  ;D

so far so good. yes, it was a clean restore point from late last evening. i have not run the scannow in the run box. should i hold off on that for the time being as well?
