PUP's, commercial keyloggers and the like
« on: March 30, 2011, 11:33:01 PM »
i just read this article: http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-20048896-245.html claiming that keylogging software came pre-installed on Samsung laptops. Sneaky, huh?

my question is this: is there a list of all the PUPs that avast can detect and is Starlogger(the software in question) one of them? This is more of a curiosity than anything, i don't have a Samsung laptop.

thanks for any info

if it wasn't on CNet (or some other known site...) I would have ignored the report... well this is absolutely amazing and shocking :o I hope they check their source ;D

edit: well hopefully Avast should detect it, should... I can't verify that obviously.

Any keylogger should be logged as PUP, shouldn't it? What do you think?
Anyway, -1000 points in my personal opinion about Samsung...

False alarm about Samsung.

I can't believe that: the samsung rep telling that samsung just provides the hardware while MS would be doing the whole software job (installing)  ;D ;D ;D when everyone knows (or should know) that OEMs pre-install Windows +  a tone of crap (trial crap mostly).

Just call MS to report a Windows issue on an OEM device, and hear with delight the MS rep's reaction >>> he'll send you back to the OEM reps ;D ... who knows nothing most of the time, except a couple of canned answers that he's been taught during the training phase, after getting the job ;D ... no need to add the guys are trained to lie too :)

PC Tools Firewall, Avast 6, "SpyShelter" ANTI KeYLOGGER..Work Awesome together..Oh and Spywareblaster for active X..
Spyshelter is " AntiKeylogging AntiScreenCapture, AntiClippboardCapture, AntiGetText, System Protection, AntiKernel Mode Logger.....Actually there isn't much that gets by it unnoticed...Easy to set up, adjust, change settings, I tested it as a firewall test without PC Tools firewall...Did better than most firewalls...Not to mention any...
   Just my 2 cents

Cheers!!! and safe surfing!!!

yeah there's still this update, at the bottom of the article:

Quote
CNET Reviews could not find the keylogger on a Samsung Series 9 laptop.

... but from what I read in the article, I trust the report intuitively...

I think that these SpyShelter people made a marketing decision

32 bit systems support - free
64 bit systems support - 24,95 Euro one time fee

I haven't seen this before; i.e. giving away 32 bit software free and charging for it if you have a x64 system.

for what it's worth, Avast does detect the setup file for Starlogger

Good. And not a PUP, which is better. A malware itself.

Nesivos..."SUPPORT" for 64 bit could be more complicated  ..ha ha  Just kidding..
I find it very  good for a free program and haven't even thought of support..Too easy...So far No issues and very easy to use ...works like a charm and can be adjusted to your preferances....
    Just my 3 cents...
Cheers!!! and safe surfing!!

64 bit is more complicated due to patch guard.

that conflicts with yesterday's story :

"Eventually, a supervisor got on the phone and confirmed that Samsung put the software on the laptop to monitor machine performance "and to find out how it is being used."

strange indeed

http://www.h-online.com/security/news/item/False-alarm-over-an-alleged-Samsung-Trojan-1219437.html
