Sends email alerts to you when found.

Virus Alerts
avast! is able to send a warning message to other users whenever a virus is detected. This feature is especially useful for network administrators who will be immediately notified about a virus infection on any computer in their network so that they can react quickly.

To create an alert, first select how it should be sent from the list of available options:

Email (SMTP) - The alert will be sent as an email using SMTP protocol, but certain other settings need to be specified first - see below.
Email (MAPI) - The alert will be sent as an email using MAPI protocol, but the MAPI profile name and password must also be specified - see below.
Printers - The alert will be sent to the specified printer
Network Message (WinPopup) - The alert will be sent as a network message, but first it is necessary to enter the IP address or the network name of the person to whom the message should be sent.
SMTP Settings

Here the SMTP server details should be entered:

Server address - the address of the outgoing email server e.g. smtp.server.com or 192.168.1.25
Port - the default is 25
From address - the address of the sender
If the SMTP server requires authentication when logging on, you should also check the box "If the SMTP server requires authentication:" and enter the username and password.

MAPI Settings

Here you should enter the MAPI profile name and password to be used if alerts are to be sent as an email using MAPI protocol.

lol it does actually work, with email providers that don't require ssl. Actually if you just test it with a Gmail (so ssl required) account, the test will work, but just the test, you'll never get any alert.

I wanted to get this to work, and even discussed this with one of the devs...I still couldn't get it to work with one that didn't need SSL...would have been nice.

The test email worked for me, but live testing with something like eicar test file nothing was sent.

My email didn't require SSL either.

I think I got it to work with hotmail once (as long as the new "full https" setting isn't activated). (edited: not related at all of course )

okay just tested again with hotmail, just the test works, "real" alerts (EICAR) doesn't.

off topic: I got a weird alert from the file shield at my first EICAR download. Note that the alert doesn't tell what shield intercepted it but okay, that's the file shield ... remains that the web shield didn't ... it did when I tried a second time.

This is because the test uses settings from the mail shield (and can initiate SSL). The actual alert can't use the mail shield, hence the need for a non SSL email provider.

 Yeah that's what Vlk told me a while ago, so why can't the actual alert use the mail shield?
