Hi DavidR,

Again totally agree with you, I also stay away from FB and the ad-reaping clutter it produces,

But you don't require a facebook account to view materiel only if you are going to post it. You could also use Skype to communicate.
Skype is not free!

Download Skype and add credit

I thought it was if it is Skype to Skype, http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/. Don't use it to call phones and it should be free.

That really isn't advisable for the reasons I mentioned earlier:
Well having all your connections as https, doesn't necessarily make it more secure.

If this measure is across the board all links and not just for logon-on, account settings, etc. Then the https connection prevents avast form scanning the traffic with the web shield, which could leave you less well protected.

Hi DavidR,

So our shield users should rather not have this installed:
Quote
Google has added a HTTPS browsing feature to chrome.
From the changelog
"A new HTTPS-only browsing mode. Add --force-https to your Google Chrome shortcut, and it will only load HTTPS sites. Sites with SSL certificate errors will not load. "

Release Notes 2.0.156.1
http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel/release-notes/releasenotes201561
Very cool. source: http://www.cgisecurity.com/2009/01/httpsonly-mode-added-to-chrome-browser.html#

Is that really very cool or not advisable to have on,

Not if they want their http web browsing content scanned and protected by the web shield.

With the number of hacked sites out there, which would otherwise be viewed in http protocol and that content scanned by the web shield; I certainly wouldn't want to be without the added protection of the web shield.

You only have to take a look in the viruses and worms forum to see the number of detections by the web shield to see it is invaluable.

Hi DavidR,

I knew the answer to that question, but I raised the issue because a lot of us would not be aware of the invaliable protection of the avast shields,

hmm....even if you turn on https in facebook accounts settings, if there is an unsecured content from other apps or parties, you notice a change in your address bar like https crossed sign in Google Chrome....

And when you are in https, when you try to use any app, Facebook asks you whether you want to switch off https or not....

I use https because i am on wifi

I know, which is why the answer was not directed to you, but to those viewing ("if they want their" bit)  ;D

Hi Chris Thomas,

But that https should be secure(d), and with the right certifications!Do you by the way have this installed in Google Chrome? I have, and the extension is called: Bitdefender Traffic Light, see: http://trafficlight.bitdefender.com/images/extensions.png
and I have WOT and Webutation there, but our only last resort is NotScripts and Better Pop up Blocker combined with the avast shields of course.
Really, there is so much injection malware being put on everywhere on web sites with good reputation that threats may be luring from everywhere. (That is why we are tracking them wherever we can to be exposed)...

There is no such thing as a safe social network site.

One might be safer than another but none of them will ever be truly safe to use.
