However, as you have said port 80 and port 25 are the only options, why can she use port 25 the standard SMTP port ?
...

ISP blocks it:
<snip>

Well Earthnet smtp is meant to use port 587 according to their settings, see image, so it might be worth a shot setting the account to port 25 and avast ssl accounts to 578.

I also think there might be some confusion on the qwest side as they also have webmail which would obviously require port 80 but that is on your browser.

This http://www.qwest.com/internethelp/email-thunderbird.html gives settings for your email, select the thunderbird and domain type and download the pdf file and that also indicates that port 25 is OK ???

Edit: incorrect earthlink.net info and image (removed) posted, see my next post.

It's earthnet - not earthlink.

The OP set that straight in one of his posts. I checked Earthnet sites, and yes, they only offer Port 80 if Port 25 is blocked by the ISP... totally stupid.

So the OP is using Earthnet as mail-provider and some other ISP to connect to internet. And this ISP is blocking port 25 as some others do also...

The best thing I can think of would be this:

Create a gmail-account for your girlfriend and set her earthnet account to forwarding incoming emails to this gmail-address.

Use the gmail account to send emails.

After a while everybody will be aware of the new mail-address and you can happily delete this crappy earthnet-thing completely.  ;D

Well looking at 'Earthnet' this time, I find this http://www.earthnet.net/support/email/email_ref.htm and that also states incoming pop3 port 110, outgoing smtp port 25, with alternative smtp port 587. So their whole site is confused.

Yes... I did not find that one... *sigh*

Best guess: try port 587 for outgoing.
