avast! crash win xp while uninstall
« on: May 14, 2011, 06:46:00 PM »
from time to time i need to uninstall avast! for random reasons, it could be once in a year or a month..
the problem is, that avast! cause Windows XP Service Pack 2 to crash while uninstalling, the os itself is fine and comodo/mbam/sandboxie or any other program
do not cause to the os to crash.
this is a conflict between the uninstaller and the avast! service task, while uninstalling in safe mode, everything is fine, and in normal mode it crashes (since i joined
avast! - 4 months ago)- so it is clearly an avast! bug, i have been waiting for it to be fixed but non happened, so can someone on the avast! team take a look over that problem?
btw, it happenes in all the computers in my home (XP SP2) and i dont want SP3 :)

lets say i did it, why can't avast be compatible with sp2 as well? it does support it after all.
the thing is, that im not sure if upgrading to sp3 will fix it, and it could end up with programs that won't work with it which i really dont want
to happen. - this is the reason i still use xp and not 7.

as for me, if they won't fix this issue then i will think about sp3.

In all honesty, given the information you give they haven't a hope of correcting any fault, assuming that it is avast related.

I have had to uninstall avast on a number of occasions and never had a problem with an XP crash, or do you mean BSOD ?

However, I bought this system just over two years ago and I purchased XP Pro (with SP3 incorporated), so I haven't seen this. But if it were a common issue with XP SP2 then no doubt there would be more posts about this than this one.

If it is a BSOD then you need to send the minidump files and or memory.dmp file to avast for analysis, if a) this was recent and b) if you still have them ?

Sorry, but I don't understand your point.
There's nothing to gain by using an outdated/unsupported OS.
Even the best AV out there can't close the holes in your OS...! ;)
So, if you have a legit XP - update it, else don't ask for help here.

i dont think that the problem is about legit or not, people can download sp3 if they need to.
the only reason i use sp2 is because of being compatible with other softwares, however people with sp2 deserve to the same
help as people with sp3 get, and you don't need to be rude to people. and btw my os is legit.
if you dont want to help so just don't, it doesnt mean you need to be rude to people.

1. "dont ask for help here"
2. btw SP3 got a lot of security holes too.

1. This is taken out of context.
2. That's why MS provides monthly updates for XP SP3. ;)

when you said "dont ask for help here" you make me felt like you want me out of here  ::)
anyway, the whole reason for me to use sp2 untill now is because i don't like changes, and i didn't want problems with software compabilites because of sp3.
so i planned to move from xp to win 7 directly without sp3, which will take some time.
so anyway, i except from a big anti virus company to support everyone, it doesnt even matter if i have win xp 7 or 2000, as long as the anti virus support that os,
there is no running back, and thank you avast! for providing a great anti virus for free :)

(security holes aren't my problem, i use sandboxie for almost everything and i have a great defense, the last thing i want to do is to rely on ms).

3. security holes aren't my problem...

1. As said before, there are none.
2. You're right, but sometimes support means also to update some things... ;)
3. Good luck.

if the defense is good enough, and you use a sandbox for browsing and downloading, everything is ok.
the problem starts when the computer has a lack of defense and usually the problem starts in the user lack of experience, i can assure you that xp sp3 against xp sp2
won't have much more defense, the thing that really matters is the defense and your experience with the internet.
