XP Avast not loading for non administrator account
« on: June 19, 2011, 03:17:26 AM »
My sister's XP computer got a malware - XP Internet Security 2012. I got rid of it by following the instructions in this page http://deletemalware.blogspot.com/2011/06/remove-xp-antispyware-2012-xp-internet.html
However, after that, whenever she logs into her  (non administrator) account, and clicks on firefox, it opens a box saying which program do you want to use to open this file. I logged into the administrator account and installed Avast Free, which works fine in the administrator account, but when she logs on to her (non administrator) account avast does not show up in her taskbar. I also tried Microsoft Security Essentials, but it also does not load when she logs into her account.
What can be causing this??
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,

Download and run FixNCR.reg http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/reg/FixNCR.reg

Hopefully this will fix the problem caused by XP Internet Security 2012.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I got it fixed by downloading a file from this website.

http://dougknox.com/

The file was in the File Association Fixes, Exe File Association Fix sub menu. The download is xp_exe_fix.zip. And the file is xp_exe_fix.reg

Pretty much the Xp Security removed the default program for .lnk files. Since you already downloaded the registry key from dougknox, just run it and it should work. Then, restart the computer.
