I f I copied/loaded a infected music (wma./.mp3) file from PC to ipod.  And then ran Avast which cleared (deleted) the file on the PC,  - can it come back from ipod to PC?

not if you also delete it in the iPod ?

and unless you have a infection running active on the ipod....not sure if malware like that exist?

upload suspicious file(s) to www.virustotal.com and test with 43 malware scanners
when you have the result, copy the url in the address bar and post it here for us to see

Thanks for the response.

My main PC is running a Avast scan direct from bootup (blue screen) and it indicated that several music files were infected with "WMA:wimad [drt}".  The files are/were deleted from the PC.  But I have them on my ipod.  I believe the ipod file format is different, but I am not sure.  This uncertainty makes me wonder if the transmittal of the virus from ipod to pc when I connect via iTunes.

I doubt the original (infected) file still exists.

The scan in still running.  It is my first complete scan, so it is taking a number of hours to run.

iPods usually use MPEG-4 files. I think they can play MPEG-3 but mine cannot play WMA. As for the infections, you should be alright as long as the files are not able to execute.
