AVAST using too much bandwith
« on: August 23, 2011, 12:44:55 AM »
I have VERY limited bandwith, and ever I installed AVAST antivirus I noticied a general slow down on my internet browsing, using resource monitor en Win7 I now see that ALL the time AVAST is using around 50% of all my bandwith..... is this normal, how can I disable or restrict this?? I think is a really big problem for people paying for MB on internet,

Here is the image of Resource Monitor:

PS. I Have automatic updates for the antvirus database and app engine deactivated.

Have you not noticed the corresponding drop in that used by firefox and Chrome ?

The reason is that the Web Shield filters http traffic through its localhost proxy. So it intercepts the browser connections and routes the traffic back through the localhost proxy to the browser cache.

The process that controls the shields and proxy is avastSvc.exe, so you are seeing it assigned to that rather than your browser/s.

So deactivating auto updates will have zero impact, and the virus definition updates can be measured in KBs rather than MBs. So it is a false economy disabling it and could leave you less well protected.
