Does avast scan files downloaded to a network location?
« on: August 24, 2011, 06:14:25 PM »
Hi,

This is my first time on these forums because I have not had any issues and avast has been a great program!  ;D

However, I now have a question I'm hoping you can help with. I have a Windows 7 desktop that I use as my main machine (it has the latest version of avast home installed). I also have another secondary machine that is older with limited resources (no AV installed). If I am sitting at my main Win7 machine and download a file from the internet DIRECTLY to the networked secondary machine, does avast scan this file for viruses even though it is saved directly to another computer on the network? I want to make sure I am covering all my bases and that the files are safely virus free on the secondary machine.

Thank you in advance for your help. I look forward to your response.

if you download and save it on the Win7 ( with avast ) machine first, and then move it over to the other Yes.....but yes i think it should do that
if you do the download on the W7 machine then the incomming traffic is scanned by avast

anyway there is a way to test this... using Eicar test file

Thanks for that link. I thought I'd go ahead and report back on the results of me test.

On that site, you could either download the file from http or https. Avast would not even allow me to download the file (wouldn't start the download) to ANY location (local or network) if I just tried to download from the regular http links.

Downloads were allowed with the https links. Windows Defender actually picked up on it, NOT avast when I downloaded either to a local directory OR to a network location. However, when I manually scanned the file with Avast after I downloaded it locally, Avast did detect it. So that's weird? I wonder why it did not pick up on it when downloading from https?

Anyway, I don't think I have a definitive answer, but I believe I will just make an effort to download locally first and then move to the network location. Better to be safe than sorry. Don't really want to take any chances with infecting the other PC.

Thanks for your help!

The only way to download, is to download the zip file & click Windows defender to ignore.
Avast won’t pick up the zip file until opened.
