What will be the future of avast for Mac?
« on: October 07, 2011, 07:44:36 PM »
I mean, Symantec released their paid versions (http:// us.norton.com/macintosh/internet-security/ and http:// us.norton.com/macintosh/antivirus/).
Will avast for Mac remain free?
Will we see a premium version in the future?

Just a small note - for the version 12, there's stated "1.5 GB free space on disk / 2 GB ram / MacOS X 10.7 only" as necessary system requirements...

The future is still open and there are some internal discussions about that. Probably the model will follow the Windows version. A free version for non-commercial use, as well as a paid version (possibly with some extra features).

Thanks Mity. It's not all the times that we can have something disclose (?) here about the future policies.
By the way, the freemium model is a great success, isn't it?

Tech,

I think its important that Avast for Mac be free for now to get users a chance to try it and to restore its reputation since, lets face it, the first release was not exactly up to par with Avast's usual Quality standard.

Once the product has that reputation and given time as more Mac units are sold a Paid version sounds like a logical progression.

Mac, I understand your point of view.
But, don't we all hate freewares that become sharewares after some time? ;)
I think the users feel like being used as rats in a laboratory with this model.

I agree. I asked Avast about this and did not even get the courtesy of a response.

I hope to see Avast at AppStore.  ;)

Love to have all my Apps from one source. Very convenient.
