Avast or Norton?

I just recently set up an Outllook Express account and didn't realize how great Avast's mail scanning abilities were, I defintely don't feel that level of securiy with my
Yahoo/Norton not only does Avast warn of definte virus threats, it also informs you possible potential ones!!  Keep up the good work!!  Also when scanning should all other programs be closed?

No, you do not need to close any other programs.  It will take a bit more time to scan, but it really is negligible.

Avast will scan all files open or closed (except zipped files...I think).

Set Avast for a Thorough scan including Archives.  Also, run a Boot scan once in awhile.
