Working with K-9 ?
« on: November 14, 2004, 12:53:34 PM »
Hi all, been using Avast, which I've been really pleased with, together with K-9 anti-spam and maildirect for sending via my smtp server, all 3 have been working fine together in my Outlook express 6, then when I updated the program for Avast on the 13th of November, it seems to have knocked out the settings for K-9 somehow ;-(  (Maildirect is working ok though).
Been looking around on the pc and on the net for a solution and can't seem to find one - can anyone help please?

Why don't you provide us with some specific info. Firstly what is your account settings in Outlook Express? With k9, your POP3 server should be 127.0.0.1, port: 9999 - unless you have configured K9 diferently.  Have you read other topics about mail scanning here in the forum? Mail scanning is now performed automaticly on all connections leaving your PC,  in your situation that would be even before K9 gets the mail.

You might also find some answers by searching the forum for K9 keyword. Eg. here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=11;action=display;threadid=8070

Firstly what is your account settings in Outlook Express?

** Incoming mail server account name:
127.0.0.1/110/enquiries
Server port numbers Incoming mail server:
9999

With k9, your POP3 server should be 127.0.0.1, port: 9999 - unless you have configured K9 diferently.  Have you read other topics about mail scanning here in the forum?

** Loads.

Mail scanning is now performed automaticly on all connections leaving your PC,  in your situation that would be even before K9 gets the mail.

** I was under the impression that the sequence, (in my particular case), was Outlook express 6 - K-9 - Avast ?

change you account name to:

your.real.pop3.server/110/your_real_user_name

That will direct Outlook Express to download mail from K9, which in turn downloads it from you.real.pop3.server port 110 - via avast!. The last step - 'via avast!' is done automaticaly without any config.

Thanks for chipping in here, but that doesn't work.
Just in case I didn't make it wasn't clear before, Avast is working ok and checking every message as it should, but since the Avast prog update, K-9 isn't checking the em's like it was before.

What do you mean by not working?

server: 127.0.0.1
port: 9999
username: your.real.pop3.server/110/your_real_user_name

With this settting it will definitely go through K9!!!! I can not imagine how it possibly could overcome K9, while it is running on port 9999, on 127.0.0.1.

Confirmed. I'm working with K9 and TB! and have the above settings. All Mails comes from POP3-Server thru Avast! - K9 to my mail-client.

It means that everyhting esle is working fine, but no emails are going through K-9.

Quote
server: 127.0.0.1
port: 9999
username: your.real.pop3.server/110/your_real_user_name

I've done all of that, in fact I've done all of the stuff below, from:
http://keir.net/k9_expert.html
but still no good

Change the POP3 server port to 9999.
Change the POP3 server to 127.0.0.1.
The POP3 account user name should be changed to incorporate the original POP3 server, port and user name values into one long string, separated by a "/" character. Here's an example:
Suppose your original account user name value was robin and the original POP3 server was pop.west.cox.net and the original POP3 port number was 110. The new user name entry would now look like
pop.west.cox.net/110/robin

When I input 9999 as the incoming port in my OE6, I get these error messages when trying to receive em's:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'sample', Server: mail.changedfromrealname.com, Protocol: POP3, Port: 9999, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

My incoming server settings are:
mail.changedfromrealname.com/110/enquiries  (enquiries is my user name).

Any other ideas?

From the error message, especialy "Server: mail.changedfromrealname.com" I can see you are NOT having the "127.0.0.1" entered as a server name! Please check your account settings in Outlook Express. Maybe post a screenshot...

I DID try:
Incoming server settings:
127.0.01/110/enquiries  (enquiries is my user name).
a couple of days ago and get this:

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your User Name was rejected. Account: 'Test', Server: '127.0.0.1', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Cannot connect to POP server 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1:110), self connecting', Port: 9999, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC91

Just solved it, thanks for all the help.

Apparently, just speaking to my webhost, I needed a hash # in the OE6 settings for incoming server user name.
