How to save updates
« on: November 21, 2004, 02:57:36 PM »
I plan to format hard drive and reinstall Windows XP. I will reinstall Awast Home edition. Now i have version 4.5, but i dont remember which version i installed few monts ago. I dont want to lose my updates since then. What should i do to save them (it will spare time downloading them again). Thanks!

Just download the latest version from the website and save that on floppy/cd/dvd/thumbstick or whatever you want.

Won't you format the HDD?
You will lose everything...  ;D
Well, if you follow Eddy's advice it should be ok... If you download the new version you can use the same Register key you have with version 4.1. No trouble  ;)

Thank you!
Is there any chance to save the virus definitions before formating and use them with old version after formating ?

I would recommend that the first thing You do after reinstalling Avast! is to update the virus definitions Online - so in my oppinion no need to save the last definitions.

Igor, peterfu is right... There is no need to save the old definitions as you can get all of them updating again. They are incremental so you won't lose anything. Updating will always bring you to the last definitions.

You should also save a copy or your firewall program and install it after you re-install windows and before you go on-line.

Thank you all!
Should I use Windows XP firewall (have SP2) or some other software?

Win XP Firewall only potects incoming. it does nothing out.
I personally use Zone Alarm
You can get it HERE.
Hope that helps.

Sorry, but I thought that picture will be resized automatically. It is stated on the page for profile editing:
