[Resolved] Where?
« on: December 23, 2011, 08:19:34 PM »
Does anyone have the link that says WebRep is automatically compatable with each new release of Chrome and/or Firefox?  ???

I saw it before somewhere here on the forums...honest.  :)

I don't have the link at hand, but can confirm this for FF.

Hmmm... Do you search for the link or for the info..?? ;)
For the link search the forum, else wait for further replies...
As said this is true for FF, but no idea about Chrome.
And btw, the first who posted the info was Gopher in a beta thread, afaik.

Possibly this?
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=85603.msg693182#msg693182

From another post on the subject
Line 17 is the key one ;)

Essentially this file tells FF what the addon is compatible with.

So if it said:

Code: [Select]
<em:maxVersion>7.*</em:maxVersion>
then it would be listed as incompatible in 8 and above.

By making it say:

Code: [Select]
<em:maxVersion>*</em:maxVersion>
it means that it will not report as incompatible with any future version.

The Post

Though that is not to say that a change in Firefox may cause it not to work later on. That is simply stopping it reporting as incompatible since FF updates so much faster than avast does.

@ spgSCOTT  Thanks! That's the one. Does this mean that WebRep will be compatable with Chrome and FF even with rapid fire releases?

It sounds more like you will no longer receive an incompatibility message.
Which is totally different from an assurance that it is actually compatible.  :o

You're welcome :)

This is only related to FireFox.

Bob is correct.

Essentially, when it updates it checks the install.rdf file of each addon and if the Firefox version is higher than listed in that file, it reports it as incompatible. This is done regardless of whether the addon works or not.

The decision to change the avast one to have no maximum version listed means that Firefox will never just report that it is incompatible. It is easier this way, since avast would have to release a program update just for WebRep each time Firefox updates, so that it would work rather than have the forum (etc.) filled with posts about it needing updating.

So far, this has been fine and the changes to FF have not had any impact on the functioning of WebRep. Naturally though, there is the possibility that a future update will cause issues.
