;D Success!! When I booted in Safe Mode the first time I had selected Administrator, and that is why the aswclear program was not showing. I switched user to my personal settings and the icon was there and I was able to uninstall Avast, even though Avast was not showing up in my programs list. I cleaned my registry and now I am good to go. Thank you for your diligent and prompt help. I was really getting nervous thinking I was going to have to format and reinstall Windows. A dozen virtual Christmas candy canes for you!  :D

Thanks so much. I will watch it carefully. I am very cautious about what I download and I have no clue how this got to me. I think I have had it for about a week, but only became aware of the little x on the Avast icon in my system tray yesterday. I thought all was running as it should.
