Internet mail, Avast and ZoneAlarm
« on: November 24, 2004, 05:36:13 PM »
I updated my Avast installation (auto update) to 4.5.523 and my Thunderbird (0.9) email program can no longer send messages.

Before updating Avast, my Thunderbird was not configured to use Avast as an email anti-virus scanner and it was working fine.

After updating Avast, Thunderbird receives mail ok, but it hangs on sending mail.

If I shutdown the Avast Internet Mail provider then the mail goes through.

If leave the Avast Internet Mail provider enabled and shutdown ZoneAlarm  (5.5.062) then the mail goes through.

DT,

If you shut down Avast, the mail goes through because Avast is not longer being monitored by Zone Alarm.

If you shut down Zone Alarm, everything goes through.

What you need to do is open Zone Alarm and allow every instance of Avast to connect, including Avast Setup and email scanner.

Try again.

Thunderbird .9 does not require configuration UNLESS you are using Windows 9x or ME.

The new 4.5 mail filtering works only with NT, 2000 and XP.

Good Luck.

Thanks, but I had already configured everything as you suggested.

Since my first post I downloaded and installed the lateset Avast beta (4.5.531) and my problem is resolved with no further configuration changes.

I guess something was fixed between .523 and .531.
