WIN98se: "Invalid System Disk" on Reboot
« on: November 25, 2004, 10:01:44 PM »
I downloaded Avast! 4 Home for my sisters computer that has win 98se on it and set up the AntiVirus protection to "schedule a boot-time scan" so when I rebooted it I got a black screen with the words: "Invalid System Disk".

So I changed the boot settings in BIOS to boot 1. cd 2. hd 3. floppy and rebooted. Same "Invalid System Disk"

So I made a boot cd (my computer doesn't have a floppy drive) for WIN98se put in in her computers cd drive and the screen went away but its just black and has a flashing "_" on the top left corner of the screen and nothing happens when I press the keyboard. I made a boot cd for WIN98 and got the same problem. :o

The boot-time scan is not supported on Win9x platform - such an option is simply not there...  ???

Her computer started fine before I installed the antivirus software and now it won't start.

So even booting from a bootable cd fails, right?
Than it has nothing to with Avast, but more likely the hardware.
- Open the system
- unplug all cables
- take out the ram
- put back in the ram
- hookup the cables
- try to boot (make sure the drive is rcognized correctly in the bios)

And while you have the system open, perhaps do some dust cleaning also.
