Real Time Shields tab not opening

Ohai.

I've been using avast for a while now, but recently I've encountered a problem with it.

The "Real Time Shields" tab won't open. When I click on it, nothing happens. So as far as I'm aware, I have no access to any of the real time shield settings.

I know I've run it before because I had to disable the POP email scans (as it wasn't letting any in), but that was when I very first switched to it probably mid 2011.

Any help is appreciated, feel free to throw any jargon at me as I know technical stuff.

Try a repair of avast then reboot.

If you want avast to work with your email client you need to disable the incoming and outgoing security so that then avast can handle the connection and security for you.

By repair, do you mean a reinstall?

If you want avast to work with your email client you need to disable the incoming and outgoing security so that then avast can handle the connection and security for you.

Ohhhh ok. Well anyway the reason why I want to get to the real time shields is that it might be slowing my gaming down. One of my friends had it drop his by quite a bit. Once disabled it was all fixed for him.

Go to control panel\remove programs and double click avast and scroll down to repair and accept, reboot when finished.

I would try adding the game to the file system shield exclusions before disabling any shields.

Ok I'll do the repair now.

EDIT: I get this error...
"Error processing packages. Please use full update."

Time for a full uninstall and reinstall?

Probably no need to uninstall (we'll see later). Download the latest version of avast (the same edition you are using; I'm guessing Free? ). Install it over your current installation and reboot. Please report back.
