File Hippo Update Checker
« on: January 19, 2012, 07:45:20 AM »
I saw Essexboy recommend this app to a user so I decided to try it. I was less than impressed to say the least. I ran it and it found two supposed updates and 4 or 5 beta versions of things I have installed. I am not interested in betas and the two supposed updates turned out to be wrong anyway. The first one was for Java. It recommended the 64 bit version of Java 7.0.2. I browse with the 32 bit IE9 so a 64 bit Java wouldn't work. It should have recognized the browser that was displaying the results page. In addition, the Java site is still offering up v6 update 30 as the recommended one to install. Even they are not ready to push v7 to everyone. The second "update" was for uTorrent. It said the latest version was 3.1 but when I opened my uTorrent, which is v3.0 and did the check for updates, it said none were available. I would not recommend using the FileHippo app to anyone at this time. I don't use Secunia either though because I can keep up with things very well on my own.

I got the update to utorrent last night through the GUI, filehippo has had that build on there site since the 11th of jan.

I dont use any of the update checkers ( filehippo, secunia ) myself, just another thing to go wrong  ;D

Why dont you use the 64bit browser  ??? the v6 update 30 also comes in 64 bit as does flash and silverlight now also so no real reason not to use the 64bit browser  ;)

The update version is based on your system architecture not your installed software.  :)

I also do not use the 64 bit version of IE9 because it can't be set as the default for some reason.

Theres only a few of my programs that even use the 32bit browser just for manual update checking but other than that iv had no issues with using the 64 bit 100% of the time.

You can not set IE9 64 bit as the default and have links or favorites open it from a cold start. It also is rated as being much slower than the 32 bit version.

FileHippo is really for the non technical savvy people... I.e. those who do not know what an update is, it is purely to try and add a little extra security for them

My IE9 64 bit browser is just as fast as the 32 bit version.

Do you have a reference that indicates the difference ???

I use FileHippo update checker at least once per day.

You can set FileHippo to hide betas in it Settings.

No cant set as default but its just as easy to click on favourite's inside the browser  ;)

I have'nt noticed any difference in speed, if anything maybe a fraction quicker with 64.

At Wikipedia it says that the 64 bit version of IE9 does not contain the JIT compiler and therefore is up to 4 times slower processing things that require that. I also could not get any settings to stick in FileHippo but that was probably because I tried the standalone version that has no installer.

There is also this from a ZDNet article:
Quote
It turns out that IE 9 64-bit, which I presumed was the most advanced version of IE, was actually using an older, much slower JavaScript JIT engine, while IE 9 32-bit was using the far more efficient Chakra JIT.

Sure enough, when I asked, Tim Sneath, Microsoft’s Senior Director of Windows and Web Evangelist, “The 64-bit IE 9 RC doesn’t use the Chakra JIT does it? It uses the older, far less efficient one, right?” Sneath replied, “That’s correct–we put all our JIT compiler investment in this release of Chakra into the 32-bit compiler, since that’s the one that is near-universally used today. The 32-bit browser is the default even on 64-bit systems, since almost all add-ons are 32-bit only at this time. The 64-bit version provides no real advantage, since no browser scenario requires access to >2GB of user memory in a single process.”

There is a new version of the Peacekeeper browser benchmark and I ran IE9 in 32 and 64 bit.

32 bit--- 1052 points
64 bit---  662 points

I tried the peacekeeper.futuremark test and I received 85 points with IE8 on my XP Pro system and I will test it on my Windows 7 system now.
