computer bog down
« on: December 05, 2004, 12:52:20 AM »
I am a new user to avast; trying to get away from norton.

When VRDB activates, my computer acts like all the cpu resources are being diverted, and slows down a lot... I don't know if VRDB never shuts down when I close the screen saver, or whats going on.

I am aware that you can shut VRDB off totally, but I would like to keep it if possible. I know it contributes to the protection of my pc.

Thanks for your help.

EDIT: System Specs.

Asus A7N8X-E
AMD XP 2800+
512 DDR 400
Radeon 9800 Pro [Catalyst Drivers]
Sound Blaster Live
XP Pro SP1

I don't bother with a screen saver ever, I'd rather my system went into standby. But I have mine set to generate the VRDB when screen saver is running.

So effectively it will never run automatically, I do regular maintenance tasks and every two weeks as part of those tasks I manually run the VRDB. I do it at a time when I am not going to be using the computer for a while. It only takes a few minutes 5 minutes tops. Your first one will usually take some time but after that 3-5 minutes.

This is obviously dependant on your system, cpu, ram, size of data to be checked, etc.

darkparrot,

The most efficient manner in which to set the VRDB generation is when the computer is idle (according to the time you have set in the ini file).

It will momentarily stop when you enter anything on the keyboard and will resume by itself when the computer is again idle.

It is essential that you allow the VRDB to backup vital files.
