Avast 7.0.1407 GUI in Vista
« on: February 26, 2012, 11:21:37 AM »
I decided to start a separate topic about my problem with Avast GUI in Vista.

To set the scene, I have: Windows Vista Home Basic SP2 Russian; Avast Free 7.0.1407; SpywareTerminator 2012 v.3.0.0.61, SpywareBlaster 4.6; RUBotted 2.0.0.1030; Windows 7 Firewall Control 5.0 Beta (then - 4.1).

I installed Avast 7 after complete uninstallation of Avast 6. After installation Avast 7 worked just fine but I couldn't register it on-line and I didn't see usual promo-adds on the main tab and on the Support tab. I reinstalled Avast again - still no on-line services. Then I uninstalled both Avast 7 and Windows 7 Firewall Control 5.0 Beta, and after that I reinstalled Avast 7 - the services became available. Then I installed Windows 7 Firewall Control 4.1 and the services were still available. But as soon as I rebooted my computer, the services and adds disappeared from the Avast GUI.

I completely removed Windows 7 Firewall Control and reinstalled Avast 7 - everything was fine till the next reboot. The services and adds disappeared again. I opened my Control Panel and directly allowed Avast in Windows Brandmauer but the services and adds are still invisible.

I would like to hear any advice but I hope somebody from Avast developers will answer here.

It seems I again found a possible cause of my problem.

I found that my Windows Media Player didn't start. To make it short, I uninstalled WMP's add-on for Muz.ru (an on-line music shop), then I opened the command line and re-registered jscript.dll and vbscript.dll. I rebooted and tried to start WMP - it started in the normal way.

Next, I opened my internet-connection and suddenly saw that Secunia PSI Tray icon started to work again. I opened Avast and saw the adds back too. After that I re-installed Windows 7 Firewall Control 4.1 and rebooted. Now I have three programs repaired: WMP, W7FC and Avast 7 GUI.

I would like to believe that I really and finally solved the problem.

I have to reopen the thread. The ads and the items in support section of the main Avast window disappeared again and I can't understand why.

As these parts of the UI are loaded from the net, probably just a server issue.

In the free version the Summary section is where the ad and avast! News Service normally reside, I still have them and haven't had a break in that display, see image1.

The same it true for the Maintenance, Support section all entries, image2.

And what about VPS updates? Since yesterday I got only streaming updates. When I open Avast to manually check for updates, I can see only the empty progressbar. Avast says that it starts the initialization and then - nothing, until I cancel the check. And I saw other complaints in the Russian sub-forum about the absence of updates since yesterday.

You have something else going on with your system as this VPS initialising/stalled is an indication of the failed updates issue.

You need to run the updatefix, see  http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=94514.0.

I give up. I can't understand what is happening. Since I started using Avast 7 the problem with adds and support functions appears again and again.

I install every build of Avast 7 (now it's 4014) from scratch and every time I can see the adds on the main tab, the on-line functions on the support tab and the offers on the market tab. But if I reboot or start my PC the next day, all of them disappear. When I try to open the market tab, Avast does some searching, finds nothing and at last says that I must be connected to the internet in order to see the content of the tab. It's very strange to be connected but at the same time to be informed that I am not connected.

At last! The issue is solved at last. I don't know what was fixed since I wrote my first post in this thread but in version 7.0.1426 all the multimedia content works as it should.
