Why is it necessary/recommended to have the Avast Icon displayed? This gives would be thieves an immediate indication that the device is probably capable of being monitored.

Otherwise, it could be a peace of mind that it is protected (against thieves and malware).
If the phone is protected, it won't help without the password or changing the SIM card.
You can disable the icon without losing protection though :)

Due to the nature of Android OS, it is best for an app that provides any kind of protection to have the icon there, although we try to reduce its influence to minimum. Right now the only part of the suite that MIGHT be influenced by removing the notification icon is the Web Shield.
