Always remove normally (if possible).   Then run the uninstaller in safe mode to clean any possible leftovers.

I and many others don't recommend using Revo uninstaller for removal of security based applications. For those using the companies specific uninstall tool is the preferred option. Some will mention the advanced uninstall (or whatever it is called) for Revo, but that option is only available in the Paid version I believe.

No way would I pay when you can use the specific uninstall utility from the company for free.

Well, I guess I should re-qualify that.  If a program / company has a reputable and well done un installer, then yes, I would use that.  I have not use the Avast Uninstaller yet.  But way too many companies are very eager to jam your registry full of crap, but never bother taking any of it out when you un install a program.  For those, I use Revo.

Revo can seriously mess up your uninstalls as it doesn't recognize the proper uninstall procedure for the programs it removes, it basically just rips the program out of the system and from my testing it leaves just as many registry entries and leftover files as a botched uninstaller does, always best to use the normal uninstall method and follow with the vendors uninstall tool - if the vendor does not supply any removal tool then a manual search for leftovers in computer and registry is much more effective.

If removing shared DLL files doesn't bother you, then be my guest.
Not nice to find out some month later that because you used Revo or one of the other generic
removal tools, that some of your programs now no longer function and need to be re-installed.
(Been there, done that.  :( )

Revo and the other generic Removal tools need to be used with extreme caution.
Not recommended for novice computer users.

Avast should provide a separate uninstaller.

It's here already for a long time. ;)

Actually, Revo uninstaller will first run the built in uninstaller for the program that you are un installing. After the program completes, then it goes through and looks for additional debris left over.  I have run it on some programs, and it has found an additional 1,600+ items that other software left behind.  Maybe you guys have experience with much older or other uninstaller versions,  But i am a pretty strong advocate of Revo.

You may be a strong advocate of the program but that doesn't change the facts. Sorry.

No, not really. I'm using the very last of Revo.
Try, for instance, uninstalling Microsoft Security Essentials with the advanced mode of Revo... You'll see if you can do much things with your computer after that...
By the way, take a full backup of your registry with ERUNT and know how to restore it... ;D

Running Pro 2.5.7 here. I would be very carefull when uninstalling programs which ask for reboot.

I am with you on that uninstall Tech.
You can also try to uninstall DivX Plus Player, 60.000 registry left overs some of them belong to WMP
