Install Anti theft Rooted, then Unroot
« on: April 20, 2012, 12:29:16 AM »
Hello! I've recently rooted my phone to remove unwanted bloatware, then unrooted. I don't care to leave my phone rooted, but would like to know if this could cause any complications:

If I root my phone, install anti theft, then un-root?

The only reason I would want to try this is to ensure anti theft survives a facotry reset. I don't need to use its other root features, nor do I use any apps that require root access. Just so that if my phone is stolen and reset, I can still (eventually) find it, and keep it locked.

To use root features of avast! Mobile Security you need to keep the phone rooted.
I'm not sure about antitheft.

Nothing survives a ROM flash: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=97299.msg776580#msg776580

I'm not worried about using root features - I keep my phone locked anyway, so if it gets stolen, the theif will HAVE to either flash a ROM or do a factory reset. Since it's more likely the person will be able to do a factory reset, I'm more concerned about that. So I'm wondering if I install anti theft while rooted, and then unroot, will this cause any stability issues with either the phone or with the (non-root) features of the app. Or maybe no one's tried it?

Thanks for the fast response.. AVAST ROCKS!

Hello,

>If I root my phone, install anti theft, then un-root?

you won't be able to save settings hard-reset proof (which is not really a problem if you set them correctly before unrooting)
and - you won't be able to do updates.

thinking about it again - this problem only applies to the convenient "direct write" method.

you can still hardreset proof save settings and do updates with the update.zip method.
(if your bootloader is unlocked and you flashed a custom recovery)

My bootloader is not unlocked and I am running a stock ROM. So pretty much I'll be fine if I unroot after setting up everything the way I want it, and just root to install updates periodically, am I correct? As long as it is installed while rooted, then it will survive a hard reset while phone is not rooted?
