avast! adds *** PHISHING *** to email subject lines
« on: May 18, 2012, 06:05:43 PM »
Does any version of avast! add *** PHISHING *** to my inbox email subject lines?

If so, how do I disable this feature?

Outlook 2010

Hi Eric,

Welcome to AVAST Forum,

PHISHING means related with Anti-Spam feature which filter whole the things for incoming mail, and you may check on Mail Shield "Expert Settings" location.

As i know the latest version 6.00 has capable to did this things.

Cheers,

Thank you for your reply!

Mail Shield >> Expert Settings >> Behavior indcludes:
Mark in subject of mail containing a virus: *** VIRUS ***
Mark in subject of suspicious mail: *** SUSPICIOUS ***

I do not see a way to turn off the phishing filter.

How do I turn off the avast! *** PHISHING *** filter?

See slide 10 in PC Magazine article about avast! Internet Security 7, slide 10.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2401519,00.asp

Slide 10: http://imgur.com/NTIdz

I do not have a phishing option under REAL-TIME SHIELDS, Mail Shield, click Expert Settings, Behavior, avast! Version 7.0.1426.
  • Mark in subject of mail containing a virus: *** VIRUS ***
  • Mark in subject of suspicious mail: *** SUSPICIOUS ***
Very confusing, have un-checked both boxes and still get *** PHISHING *** false-positives added to email subject lines.

The setting is under Additional Protection --> Antispam --> Expert Settings.
But maybe the received email is malicious?

I am getting *** PHISING *** added to my Outlook 2010 Email messages.

I delete the "*** PHISING ***" and try to save the email; but the PHISING tag is not removed when I save the edited email

I checked my advanced settings and the box for "Mark subject of phishing messages is UNCHECKED.

1. How do I turn this OFF--it's annoying

2. How can I get the tag OUT of the email message subject line--it is messing up all my Outlook rule processing.

BTW, it is marking my bank transaction notifications as phishing.

I will leave the paid version of AVAST unless I can clear this up.  DON'T mess with my email.

I'm having the same problem and altering the setting as described above didn't seem to work for me either.

Any suggestions?

In the post above, Eric 4 is on the right track with slide number 10 in his link.  It's just not under the anti virus tab.  Do the following:

1.  Click on Security Tab on Top.
2.  Click on Anti-Spam Tab on Left.
3.  Click on "Settings" in Anti-Spam window that pops up, next to the "STOP" Button.
4.  A menu will pop up (like the one in Slide 10) of Eric's link.
5.  Select the options you desire, the phishing option is #2.
6.  If your using Outlook be careful, you might want to de-select the option in the MS Outlook section at the bottom that automatically moves marked item's to spam folder until you are satisfied with what is being moved.

That's it, hope it helps

I did all these steps and Avast still marks items with "***PHISHING***" in outlook and moves them to my junk e-mail folder.  >90% of what it flags/moves are legitimate e-mails.

It's quite disappointing that no one from Avast has addressed this especially since it applies to the paid version of their product.

Try DJBone's steps.  Worked for me (with avast! Internet Security)

The setting is under Additional Protection --> Antispam --> Expert Settings.
But maybe the received email is malicious?

BTW, for the folks at avast! I love your product and recommend it to all my family and friends, but this PHISHING feature needs some work. It has never flagged an actual phishing or even suspicious email for me.  I had 100% false positive until I turned it off.

(Yes, I'm sure.  As in I make a purchase, get a confirmation email 5 minutes later, and it get's marked PHISHING. Or I schedule a credit card payment, and when the payment goes through, an email is received and marked PHISHING.)

I don't see "additional protection".  I am running avast! Internet Security Version 8.0.1483.  Under security my options are "Summary", "Antivirus", "Antispam", "Firewall", "Software Updater" and "Tools".

Tried that.  The Phishing option is unchecked, yet, Avast continues to label legitimate messages as such and move them to my Junk e-mail folder.

To be clear....the BEST case would be to get the feature to work properly.  An acceptable solution would be to disable the feature.  At the moment, neither option seems to be available to me.
