Avast won't run?
« on: December 06, 2011, 04:38:51 PM »
Since the update, avast won't run on my computer. Anybody has this problem?

The warning I get is:

The avast! antivirus program has been stopped, or is in an inconsistent state. Please re-start the program to resume protecting your system.

If I then  click on start program, it sort of tries to start, but I keep on getting the same message, and avast is still not running.

The same happens if I click the fix now button.

Can anyone help me?

Hi,

Try to repair avast! You can do it by going to..

Control Panel -> Programs and Features (Add or Remove Programmes) -> avast -> Click on uninstall /Change ->Scroll down for the option  of Repair .

And also  make sure that you dont have any other security softwares in the computer. If you have any other security software, then you need to remove them using the specific removal tool for the vendor. You can download the removal tools from

http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Check the status of avast! and reply back.

Done what you told me to do, no result, I am getting the same messages, and the same reactions as posted before.

Also, avast is the only antivirus program running, including the fw, which is up and running.

What iYogi failed to mention is that those removal tools are not for uninstalling antivirus software, they are for removing the remnants that are leftover after a normal uninstall via remove programs.
Whatever previous av's you may of had in the past it is wise to run the removal tool for each with reboots inbetween and then follow with a repair of avast and reboot again.

!avast is the only av program that ever was on this computer.

Perhaps it is an idea to rerun the original downloaded program setup?

Hi,

Then we need to reinstall avast! from scratch.

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
You can download it from http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe
2. Download the latest avast! version that you have purchased and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel. Reboot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. Reboot after you run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Check the status and post back with the results.

Done all that, re installed avast, all went well, untill  installed the update to 6.0.
So now I am installing it again from scratch, and do not install the update, untill !avast has found the glitch, or untill there is an update on the update.

Why are you upgrading to 6  ??? why not just install the latest version 6.0.1367 from a clean install http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe

because this is the version that causes all the troubles.
So I will stick to older versions untill there is another update.....

I will also report this problem to the programmakers, so they can look into it.

I have !avast internet security pack, so downloading the free version isn't an option.

Same problem here.  First saw it after a re-start after installing Windows Defender's lastest definitions update "KB915597 (Definition 1.117.433.0)".   :-\

Plus -- I can't kill the process.

Wouldn't be the first time a Microsoft update has messed things up ...

It could just be the upgrade from previous version causing your problem which is why i suggest a clean install with the latest.
