Twice in the last two days I've been asked to renew my license for Avast free and have clicked to do so but my license info still says I have only 11 days remaining to renew. It has been installed on my Win 7 64bit system for many years and has always successfully updated in the past.
-
I have a similar problem:
After performing a clean install of Avast Free Antivirus (using the offline installer), I see this under 'My licenses' (even though AvastUI.exe has internet access):
Licences on this PC:
You don't have any licenses. How about getting one?
So, how do I get a one-year free license?
-
-> https://support.avast.com/article/Activate-Free-Antivirus
-
If it were that simple, I wouldn't have asked.
After pressing the 'Upgrade now' button, the Free version isn't available!
-
Yeah, doesn't help me either. Twice I've clicked the "free version" icon when requested, the window closed but it had no effect on my old, soon to expire license. Now when I manually try as per the instructions above the icon isn't even clickable.
-
Aaand now I've just been shown the new license window again for the third time in 3 days. Clicked the right spots and still no license update only offers to buy the paid version after clicking the free version option even though Avast thanks me for activating the free antivirus program. (http://i63.tinypic.com/2f0dkiv.jpg)
-
None of you want to click the Upgrade icon as that just leads to a purchase and does nothing to renew avast free.
I hate this window as there is no button for 'No Thanks' so just use the X top right of the window to close it.
@ harvey21#What avast version number do you have ?
I have Avast Free 19.3.2369 (I have yet to update to avast 19.4, just released) on my win10 laptop. If you right click on the avast tray icon and select Registration Information it should show your avast registration and how long you have left. Mine is still Valid with 22 days left, I have yet to be reminded if it needs validated again, on the right is a big UPGRADE NOW. Don't use that as it will just lead to a payment process.
When to date has expired this screen should change to allow free registration update.
EDIT: added image.
-
When to date has expired this screen should change to allow free registration update.
This is indeed what has been reported on the forum several times: wait for the expiration quietly, you are (and you will always be) protected until "D" day.
The link number 3 (Click Select in the Avast Free Antivirus column.) is unfortunately not always displayed even after repair (according to other reports), maybe to encourage the user to switch to a paid version :-\
Or, if it's really too scary, a clean installation should reset the countdown (no more registration history , so ...) , I think.
-
@ DavidR
I have the latest version. Of the three times I've been reminded to update to the latest version I only clicked on the UPGRADE NOW button once.. otherwise I just X'd it closed so that isn't the issue. (http://i68.tinypic.com/2aenti.jpg)
@ chris..
I'm prepared to wait somewhat patiently but not forever :)
@ everyone.. thanks for your help.
-
You're welcome,
On my last renewal notice I got which was about 12 days or so out I was able to renew fairly soon after that. But that on the win10 system was almost a year ago and obviously an earlier avast version.
Even if it does expire you are still protected and if you haven't renewed 10 days after the expiry it should auto renew. Considering registration is meant to be a thing of the past, I don't understand why this is so damn complex.
Why the hell they don't just go ahead auto renew at the end of the time, if you haven't already renewed and you are still using the free program and it is a current version.
My winXP system was a fairly recent renewal Feb 2019 and that was simple I was able to renew after my first notification. But that will have still been Avast 18.2.xxxx as XP/Vista are unsupported after avast 18.8.xxxx.
-
@ chris..
I'm prepared to wait somewhat patiently but not forever :)
....my license info still says I have only 11 days remaining to renew.
not forever , just wait in first time your license realy expires , or some more days as said by DavidR
Just understand that you will be protected
-
I will look into it, but don't worry on Free AV we protect you always, nevertheless what is the "license" status..
-
Harvey can you please post a screenshot where you clicked?
-
Harvey can you please post a screenshot where you clicked?
It's not clickable at the moment.. only when it pops up (daily) warning me that the license is about to expire.
-
Hi, have exactly the same problem... but now Avast will loose me as a supporter... my friends are having problems and are leaving Avast as they find it has too many problems and the sales are aggressive.
So get the licence renewal fixed or you loose both customers and reputation...
Good luck
/P

Thanks for the screenshot. We will fix it asap. It seems like you got a wrong screen.
-
I believe that I'm getting the wrong screen as well. Will this be fixed for everyone or do you have to do it individually?
-
for everyone. you got the screen automatically? without clicking anywhere in Avast UI?
-
This explains the process:

I also paid the licence for additional $25 to upgrade to Internet security. but no email and no where to download. Try to check for email to ask Avast. cannot find. Super frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Look at the exchanges between harvey21 and MartinZ, your (basic) link which takes up the explanations already given by Asyn does not explain the "new" grey click problems (screenshot of harvey21 #13, Lucas402 (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=226583.0) and undoubtedly : o (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=226591.0) ) , we notice that the "select" button for avast free, does not appear.Of course, after a clean install, it must work properly but people will prefer to fix the problem normally
Obviously, there is a new (not very important) Avast free renewal problem, as MartinZ #15 and #17 seem to say and want to fix. :(
-
As of today I am also suffering from this annoyance. Will see what happens in 12 days time...
-
Thanks for the screenshot. We will fix it asap. It seems like you got a wrong screen.
Are we any closer to a fix? My license expires in 5 days.

More explicit details would be helpful. Have you checked your licenses? What is the expiration date for Avast Free ???

Agreed.

Pretty much just say you have 11 days even though the renewal free license is grey out. Only thing that happens is sign up for the free 60 days thing.

Free 60 day thing requires your Credit Card. Not something I would do. :)

My Avast Expires today. It's still not working.
-
It is not work.
Sometime random spam a popup that say if you want renew licence.
This popup instead is clickable on box 'Select' for get Avast Free Antivirus.
I clicked this one and close next screens, but date licence free is always same, I didn't get update.
-
I have been experiencing this same problem for the past week. I would like to add that I have been using the home version of Avast! for over a decade, and this is the first time this has ever happened.
I would very much like to continue using Avast!, but this is becoming annoying.
-
Avast is working on the problem. Even after the expiration date, you are still protected
-
I'm also seeing this reminder to renew the "Free" license, Whilst I appreciate that it is supposed to renew automatically, I'm still seeing the warning.
Would it be possible to get an appropriate activation code FOR THE FREE VERSION?, sent to the e-mail address AVAST clearly has on file, that way I can confirm I'm happy to continue using the "Free" version, even though according to other information such additional registrations should not now be needed. I generally like to confirm I'm still using particular software, not least so that vendors know to keep me on relevant mailing lists. ;D
If this can't be resolved soon , other postings in this thread suggesting a software bug (or bugs) that will be patched, I would suggest other users experiencing this issue (or Avast directly) consider making some entity that handles consumer disputes aware of the relevant issue(s), given that it has been seemingly stated that a fix for this will eventually be available.
Whilst the advertising for the paid versions isn't unexpected (after all Avast can hardly provide the minimal "free" version entirely without cost to itself.), the concerns expressed in this thread about the lack of a "No Thanks" button to reject the 'paid' upgrade, or "trial versions" are as I see it valid. Some users , I am not one of them 8), might also perceive it as a form of "upselling" which does not necessarily inspire brand confidence.
I've used AVAST for at least a decade, and this is the first time I've ever experienced a problem in ensuring the licensing is in order, and as responsible software users I would hope other contributors on this forum have the same strong views I have about software licensing needing to be unambiguous.

All good now. Thanks Martin.

Thank you Martin. It was still displaying "3 days left" for a few hours this morning, and I tried using several license renewal paths in the Avast interface that did not renew the license. However, a few minutes ago it suddenly displayed with a renewal date 366 days in the future and the warning banner was no longer present. So... the issue is resolved here.
Thanks

Guessing it's rolling out slowly, then. My version's probably polling a download server in Lower Elbonia or some such not-on-the-map place.

Edit: Ignore this! Now color text has changed to white :P

I'm still getting the white box that says "Your Current Free Protection"

Same problem as everyone else. Still not fixed. If there is a fix, can someone explain it in plain English. I am so sick of Avast. It is taking me forever to even post this because the captcha is totally unreadable.
-
Thanks, now says expires April 17th 2020, 365 days remaining. Seem to have lost a few days and today is April 19th but hey, can relax again...
-
Thank you for fixing this! :)

Well it has been my turn in the barrel, today I got a 12day reminder to renew avast free on my win10 system.
Whilst everything went fine there is a lot of push to try the AIS product and there isn't a No Thanks button anywhere in sight, but the big X top right of the window was present and did remove the window.
Finally it showed the avast free license had been renewed at 366 days remaining, which kind of makes you think should I have waited the 12 days to renew as the remaining period is lost on renewal.

Except that it will already be too late for those who will play the video except maybe for those who are on the forum frequently.
Those of them as well as those who were able to bypass all the booby traps won't need the video.
mchain sums up well the real expectations of users for a complete trust in avast, but that day seems so far away...

It should be quite obvious that I didn't create the video because I was thrilled with how cumbersome Avast made the renewal process.

I'm having the exact same problem. I get the Renew screen with the unclickable link on the left, that someone posted a screenshot of on the first page of this forum topic. I hope this is fixed soon. I've been using Avast for many years now, and have found that it really is the best anti-virus out there.

Hi guys not sure if I am supposed to start a new thread or just keep posting but i'm also having as issue with licence renewal.
My renewal was set to expire today so on the 19th April i purchased a year worth of service however I got a message that said:
Unfortunately, due to an error on our part, we have not been able to provide you with an activation code yet. Your code should be available at avast.com/find-order within the next 48 hours. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thank you for your understanding.
So I checked back and followed the instructions and nothing happened it still said that they were unable to provide me with a code.
I emailed customer support and the sales/tech rep said that she would refund me the purchase and provided me with a discount link for my troubles.
I went to proceed to purchase the renewal again with the link she provided and the exact same thing happened again. I'm not sure what's going with your service but i was hoping someone on the forums could help as its taking some time for customer support to get back to me.
Cheers,
Nav

I have reported it, hopefully you will get a response in this topic.
-
Hi Navman86,
I'm sorry for the issue you are having trying to renew your license.
Your issue is not related to the issues being discussed in this thread (which are about issues renewing free licenses), but is being caused by your order not being processed correctly.
I have sent you a personal message and replied to your support ticket about the situation now.

I have a problem with license activation for the free version. It just does not work.
In the end, the license reached 0 days and the status "expired" no matter what I did, it was impossible to activate it. I finally reinstalled but that has not changed anything.
Now it shows that the license is for 30 days. And it still can not be activated.
I click on the activation I choose free then I refuse the paid version and everything goes back to the starting point.
I have to reinstall every thirty days? It's crazy!

Hi guys, it's fixed in the latest beta, see changelog...
Hi everyone,
new beta version 19.5.2375 (build 19.5.4365) is released.

- Licenses - Fixed creating/extending of Free licenses before their expiration date

I refuse the paid version -> "no thanks" or "cross"
back to the starting point -> 30 days remaining
It's pretty clear to me that he followed your video, but it's not enough to renew his license for a year. :-[
Sorry, but that's not because avast said he has fixed the problem (#42) that it is definitely for all.
As proof, the answer of asyn with the changelog of the beta version.
If the fix had already been formally established in the dev version(19.4)
, there would be no need to integrate it into the next beta version(19.5) :(

Hi,
so I tested manual extending of Free licenses
A) extension of 30days Free to 1year Free
1) install avast Free (version 19.4) from www.avast.com (you have 30days of Free license, you can check it in MyLicenses)
2) button "Activate" in Main UI
3) button "Select" Free
4) refuse paid offer (no thanks or "X")
5) go to MyLicenses - there is correct expiration (1year)
(For button "Activate" to change to "Upgrade" you need to restart PC, restart of UI is not enough)
B) extension of 1year Free to another year of Free
1) Have 1year Free license with less than 5 days till expiration
2) red button "Activate" in Main UI or button "Select" on expiration dialog
3) button "Select" Free
4) refuse paid offer ("X")
5) go to MyLicenses - there is correct expiration (1year)
(again for UI to fully refresh, you need to restart your PC)
So this manual extending of Free licenses works just fine according to my testing.
If you have some problems with it, please send me your logs (whole folder c:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\)
and I can go through them and try to find out whats the problem in your specific scenario.
Thank you,
Regards
