Title: AVAST 5: Cannot Update Virus Definitions (AGAIN!)
Post by: cs1966 on April 23, 2010, 11:15:49 PM
Well..I posted a couple of weeks ago with the issue of not being able to update. Lots of nice folks trying to help..followed all suggestions..all to no avail. Than, mysteriously, everything updated on it's own a few days later. Now...back to square one again. Will not update either automatically or manually. Current virus def version is 100416-1, my version is 100401-0. Program version is 5.0.462. I never had any issues with the previous version of Avast.

Try to upgrade your program version or download the new setup from avast site and run it.

Been searching in the forum for exactly the same problem. In the beginning v5 seemed to work OK. It was updating on its own. After a while it stopped (as of program v 5.0.507 and defs v 100414-1). It doesn't update automatically nor manually (hangs there forever). Uninstalls, in safe or normal mode, with or without aswClear5.exe and reinstalls of the latest version don't help at all. Thinking on moving to 4.8 or other products. Is anybody going to fix this???

Don't think it needs fixing. Runs well on 40+ machines with different configs here.
I refer to the latest build. (5.0.507) If you need help, please post more info on your system(s).

Strange as it might seem, the only way I've (just) found to circuvent this was via the "Update" option in the add/remove panel (not the "Repair" one). Avast now shows as updated to v100424-0 regarding engine and virus defs. I will check and see if it updates automatically/manually as it was normally doing till about 10 days ago. In any case what kind of my sytem specs should I post?

OK, please post back your results here.
Another question, did you install avast with admin rights?
Post as much info of your system, you can get. (OS/specs/etc...)
(also other security/firewall software installed or prior installed)

Just checked, it still refuses to update (manually or auto). Again I uninstalled via control panel, booted, used the uninstall util, booted, reinstalled the latest version, booted, regged it etc. to no avail. Once again I managed to update it only via the "update" option when calling the "add/remove programes" of win control panel. But every time when trying to manually update it hangs with no error message at the "initializing, please wait.." step (1/2 or 1/3). And the autoupdate doesn't work, the defs remain at April 14th and I'm not getting any notifications that the system was updated (which used to happen at least once a day). I'm always using admin account on my XP SP3 (fully updated) system. Also using COMODO firewall, spybot S&D, ad-aware, malwarebytes antimalware (all of the above were installed for more than a year and I never had any conflict with Avast 4.8 or 5). I even manually added as permitted on comodo, all of the .exe files in the avast folder. The way the manual update process is halted makes me think that somehow the updater doesn't actually connect to avast's site in order to get any updates (while it still works when I try updating via the add/remove programs).

Just checked, it still refuses to update (manually or auto).

1. Download the latest definitions here: http://www.avast.com/download-update
2. Install and see if problem is fixed.
3. If not i would drop spybot, it sometimes interferes with avast. (also ad-aware can mean troubles)

Getting an error while running vpsupd.exe (this wasn't happening when updating through add/remove update option)

"Can't install VPS update. Please report the following errorcodes:
Ver:5.0.507
SI: 0x00000002
ST: 0xFFFFFFFE
LE: 0x00000000"

Btw shouldn't avast also log down some error codes when it fails to update (man or auto)? Where could I find those?

You can find it in setup.log in the setup directory of avast.
If you want you can try to drop spybot to see if it fixes your problem.

I thought this would have been solved in this version...I have found that in previous versions that you need to disable the self defense module temporarily for it to work.

settings --> troubleshooting tab --> self-defense

@spg Scott: You're right, after disabling the self defence module, the vpsupd.exe ran fine, though the sigs were already updated through the control panel's add/remove progs "update" option (which runs fine even with the self defense mod active)
@Asyn: I uninstalled both Spybot and Ad-aware then  booted. The problem with auto/man update (through the program's ui still persists).. This is so awkward!

I've uploaded my setup.log here if you'd care to have a look:

http://rapidshare.com/files/379965136/setup.log

I don't think there are any entries about the failed updates I try manually through avast's ui. I tried it on purpose and nothing was logged (checked b4 and after).

I was having the same problem. All I have installed in addition to Avast is Comodo Firewall. I have tried in the past to disable Comodo and then updating but this didn't work either.

I signed up to sympathise, ask for a solution and show you a screencast of the problem.

Then I did the recording and got strange results.

The definition update didn't work, but when I did the program update that did work.

Weird.

Is this a Windows 7 problem?

I'll post the screencast anyway in a hope that it may help someone.

As you got rid of spybot and ad-aware now, we'll try a clean reinstall.
You already did this before, so i won't go into details here.
- Uninstall avast
- Run the uninstall utility in safe mode
- Reinstall the latest version
- Post back results
If this doesn't solve your problem, we have to dig deeper.
Until you don't give up, i won't give up either. ;)

I've been using avast for more than 3 yrs now and it served me really well, considering it's a free program! I will try everything, it just makes me curious how on earth this happened since it was updating OK on its own till a few days ago! And contrary to Mr Brainz case, v5 was updating real nice with my COMODO setup (COMODO didn't come up with any updates in the last few days, at least that's what I think). I will try later this evening completely removing avast again and setting it from scratch, now that Ad-aware and S&D are uninstalled, just to check.. Thanks pal!

Comodo is not the problem, as it usually whitelists all files/actions of avast...

I doubt that SpyBot Search & Destroy is causing the Avast update problem.  If it is, then it would be the Teatimer module.  I don't have the module active, and have no problem updating.  It can be disabled for the Avast install.

I wonder if Avast 5 has been added to the whitelisted items in Teatimer.

Hey ya All,

Want to say LUV Avast. . . . but. . .

I've joined this topic cause. .

Running 5.0.0 4?? Saw icon wrong color, so I checked.... said PROGRAM needed update > clicked UPDATE > waited 2 hours seeing 1 of 3 showing for that time span.   ???

Checked Comodo> said ALWIL Allowed   ;D

Don't have silly Billy's stuff running ie Firewall auto updates, defense thingys!

Uninstalled Avast > Cleaned w/Regedit > Dnloaded 5.0.507 > installed > Rebooted > Registered FREE version> TRIED to run UPDATE > 1- 3 for 2 HOURS > Ran SCAN > TRIED to UPDATE > Saw 1 of 3 STILL

Followed the LINK for the UPDATE download, you so kindly provided, and TRIED to install got the same ERROR
Can't install VPS update. Please report the following errorcodes:
Ver:5.0.507
SI: 0x00000002
ST: 0xFFFFFFFE
LE: 0x00000000"

Did the (many thanks to vordme34) >>>> CP > ADD and Remove> UNINSTALL> UPDATE and BINGO it did an UPDATE BUT. . .

Go to Avast Control > SUMMARY > SEE Big “FIX NOW “ icon > Ticked it a big bunch of times > NADA happened > Go to Real Time Shields, on same screen just a ways down > TICK TURN ON a bunch of times > NADA happened

GO to REAL TIME SHIELDS Tab > ALL RUNNING except the ONE that really need to RUN > WEB SHIELD NOT Running > Clicked the icon “START” > NADA happened

Running XP Home SP 3 Comodo, Malware Bytes, CC Cleaner, nCleaner

NO spybot nor Lavasoft stuff or Windows stuff!

So now what we do….. PLEASE HELP

Thanks very much. . .!

PS. . .Can't upload screenshot to BIG for the uploader!  ???

@Gopher John: I always had Teatimer active, actually that's how I installed Avast 5 the first time about 2 months ago. Avast 5 WAS updating fine except for the last 2 weeks or so.. I have uninstalled S&D totally and now uninstalling and reinstalling it again.. I somehow have the feeling it's not going to work anyways.

@Asyn: With S&D and Ad-aware uninstalled I rebooted, uninstalled Avast 5 via add/remove programes, booted in safe, used the avast removal tool, then booted back normally. Exited Malwarebytes, killed its service in the taskmanager, disabled it also via the services console. Then reinstalled Avast 5. Booted, registered it and then as it was expected it hang forever in the "initializing.." etc step (1/2 for vps or 1/3 for program). Monitored the taskmanager processes for any new instane of any of avast's .exe when calling the manual update but nothing came up. Invoked the ashupd.exe (both with the "program" or "vps" parameters) from the cli and it brought up an Alwill logo and a "Working.." message for about 5 secs and it exited with no error code or sth. Still the only way I can update Avast 5 is through the "Update" option after calling it up from "Add/Remove Programs" in control panel. Reinstalling S&D (I'll give it a thought about Ad-aware since it never caught anything in my system except some cookies).

Btw (and though I rebooted after performing the update via add/remove programs) avast 5 now refuses to show that it is updated to the latest (100424) vps version! It seems stuck on 100414 that probably comes with the installation setup package. Just mentioning it, since till this noon it was refreshing its report on this when I performed my tricky update and was booting afterwards.. weird

Thanks. . .  "tricky update" worked for me, and did an actual real time update, but still seeing no Full REAL TIME SHIELDS even after 2 re-boots.
And when surfing and dnloading, that makes me more "nervous than a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs."

Hope someone figures this out soon.   If I had any money, I'd Almost pay someone!  ::)

Dunno, my shields seem to be on with no problems. But it's really messy having to manually update via cp's add/remove->uninstall->update route! Something is halting avast from doing it auto (or manually via the ui) and it's really weird that the program itself doesn't come up with ANY error code or sth!!

Well I did a  smart scan and nothing remarkable came up, except for some low risk tracking cookies and some file/directory/registry entries of shareazaa (which I deleted and also uninstalled the program). It also showed entries of VNC (RealVNC) which I use regularly and of ActiveMark Software of Trymedia systems (seems some game security software, dunno how I got this). Anyways I deleted them all (I will probably have to reinstall VNC later). I attach the log of HJT (confirm pls, I used the Trend micro version, did they buy the program??)

On that Q.... I can answer.....
I don't have ALL of silly Billys stuff in my XP Home on SP 3. . .  and turned OFF  on my sisters PC with Vista Home (Ugh! ) But I haven't had any problem on that PC with Avast updating or upgrading . . . YET!

I did another Safe Mode Uninstall. and moving on with ONE eye on this topic.

This situation has been experienced many times by many persons but the current answer is that it is your computer that is faulty, even after you did all the un-install/re-install process by every possible mean and every possible tool. This applies to various OS (XP, Vista, W7).

I finally returned to 4.8 until somebody in Avast decides to really fix this bug.

I am fed up with people saying that "it needs not be fixed because it does not appear on every computer equipped with v.5".
As a software project manager, I now for sure that my clients will nail me on the door of the barn should I answer that.

For all that good luck.

Hi, i checked your logs.
In avast preferences/updates be sure to:
- uncheck dialup connection
- uncheck always connected to internet
- in the proxysettings check direct connection (no proxy)
- restart
- try manual update and post back
And yes, i would also drop defender before.

This is definetely a bug (and Avast 5 is more of a beta than a final). Uninstalled Windows Defender and all of the settings you point to were already set as such (except from "Always connected" which i unchecked). Rebooted. No updates. I tend to believe that the guys at Alwill were looking for beta testers... Is there a plan C?

Ok, lets dig into comodo firewall then...
Is "avast.setup" allowed in comodo? (allow all outgoing tcp traffic to port 80)
For "AvastSvc.exe" allow at least all outgoing tcp to destination ports 465, 25, 80, 995, 110 and allow ip out (any ip/any ip) for icmp.

although Alwil's files are signed and recognised by comodo, I had already on my own whitelisted all of the files residing in avast 5 folder. Anyway I manually added all of the above as extra rules (regardless that they were already practically included in the more general rule comodo was following). Plan D  ???

First of all thank you for your help and your valuable time in these problems.

I do see "avast.setup" allowed in comodo. . . states (allow all outgoing tcp traffic to port 80)

I don't see any allowance of the "AvastSvc.exe" any port anywhere. I checked the whole of last week. It does state. . .  ICMP Destination. . .  Code 0

How do I a screen shot to you, or Avast support on my Comodo settings?

As you know the shots are to big to upload as an attachment to post!

I not savvy enough to place them into a post directly!

I was thinking that it was Comodo as it did it all of a sudden, poof, on both 5.0.462 and than same exact action, blocking Fix Now etc. again on installs of 5.0.701

Guess I'll also register to Comodo forum, but rather have Comodo and Avast work things out amoung themselves.
They the developers not me!
I"m just the endangered species.  ::)

although Alwil's files are signed and recognised by comodo, I had already on my own whitelisted all of the files residing in avast 5 folder. Anyway I manually added all of the above as extra rules (regardless that they were already practically included in the more general rule comodo was following). Plan D  ???

Did you do this in the firewall settings or are you talking about the HIPS (D+) ??
Could you temporarily disable comodo for a quick test?
Also do you run some other kind of local proxy? Means can you connect to the net without any special proxy settings? Look up your internet settings in ie, if any proxy is set there. (also Lan) How do you connect to the net? (dialup/cable/(W)Lan/DSL) Do you use a router?

I did this (adding the ports you mention) in the Firewal Security Policy

or are you talking about the HIPS (D+) ??

Is this supposed to be Defense+ cause there it is (My Own Safe Files) where I had previously added the Avast folder when I was trying to troubleshoot the update problem

Could you temporarily disable comodo for a quick test?

I had already done that before I posted at the forum  ;) Doesn't help. And if this was to be the problem I don't think avast5 could be able to update via the c/p -> add/remove option

Also do you run some other kind of local proxy? Means can you connect to the net without any special proxy settings? Look up your internet settings in ie, if any proxy is set there. (also Lan) How do you connect to the net? (dialup/cable/(W)Lan/DSL) Do you use a router?

No my ISP doesn't have a proxy and I don't use proxies at all, anyway. No proxy in net settings in IE, no nothing in the Lan tab. I connect with a 24mbps (21 mbps practically) ADSL2+ line through a NETGEAR DGN2000 router..

The "Trusted software vendors" part of COMODO seems to be working fine, never got a popup when installing/running avast5..

Right, that's what i thought right away. This was just to confirm it.
Does the update work if you disable the avast self defence module? Please try that.

Nope, I've tried that also..
Btw if the self defence mod is active, I think I get the usual alert when I update through c/p->add/remove progs.. But from the ui there's no change with the mod enabled or not..

Another try:
Start a manual update. Let it run for about 15-20 minutes.
Surf the web while waiting or do something different.
Post the last 400 lines of the avast setup.log again and also the latest HJT log. Thanks.

I was having this problem with updates. Clicking on "Direct Connection (no proxy)" in Settings/Updates/Proxy Settings fixed it for me.

Thanks!

Hello, happy bug killers ;)

Well I'm arriving in the middle of the battle, as i'm looking for an answer to my soucy : no updates.. As I saw this topic, I post here to join you.
My story, in a few words. I wanted to replace my personnal Avira AV, and decided for Avast. Downloaded last sunday, installed, ok, but no update (can't reach update server after a while). So monday, I tried at work (i'm a network admin, I easily access a test machine) on a old computer, with same error message...

Configuration :
- Personnal computer : MoBo Gigabyte, XP SP3, Ashampoo firewall, all windows updates installed and ok. replacing Avira AV.
- job computer (network admin, just a computer for kick tests), Mobo asus P4p800, 1Go, XP SP2, Spybot installed, no other AV

Removed firewall, rebooted, removed spybot, c/p - uninstall - update (success except for virus signatures). safe mode remove, anything checked. No updates... I think I tried any idea read in this topic with no success

Any other ideas ?

Thx in advance,
Thierry

On which machine did you try to install?
Did you get any error message?
Did you completely remove avira (or other av) before?

I first tried to install at home, good computer, rather new, fully updated. Removed correctly avira, rebooted then installed avast
Then, the day after, tried at work, test computer but in use.

Not a single error message.

No update (translated from french, "updating 1/3" or 1./2... then "Can't reach server"

Can update via c/p, add-remove (programs updated but no virus signature)

Sure there's something wrong, but can't find what exactly. Checked via FAQ (i've seen encrypted files bug, not applying for me), looked at registry, msconfig, removed firewall without success. No soucy with proxy (no proxy, configured directly, don't look for IE settings)

Thanks for your help

@Thierry50: Even more weird.. I can update defs via cp->add/remove, the program version is the final one anyways (as downloaded from the site).. you sure you finally get the message that the server cannot be reached? I don't get any error here, it just hangs at 1/2 or 1/3 without doing nothing at all!
@Asyn: I reinstalled Spybot again, this was not causing the problem, since it persisted when it was removed 2 days ago

Hey ya all,

I did the Avast Support thingy, 2 days ago. With comment on having them L@@K on this Topic in their forum.

I also posted on Comodo forum yesterday with not even a peep form any one!

I uninstalled Avast (sob)  :-\ Washed the Registry and Installed Avira (sob) and was immediately plagued with a larger than life/ NAG Screen Popup wanting me to Upgrade (sob)!  :-X

So . . . . if the developers (Avast / Comodo) pop in and give us a "HELP-ing" hand asap, to solve this problem than I'll be more than totally thrilled to RE-install Avast 5.0.701 (for the 5th and) last time.... (hoorah!)

When Comodo is shut OFF and no Fire Wall is running how could it be any problem stemming from any firewall? So if that be the case where is the ROOT of the cause?

Sorry just thinking out loud?  ???

Later!

Before I heard ashampoo firewall has some issues with avast 5 (cannot update even with firewall disabled), so remains of firewall may affect avast's update. When you install stand-alone VPS updater, what message you have?

And indeed I have very similar problem (unable to update VPS, process stopped with "downloading servers.def.vpx"), and strangely I CAN update VPS via my local proxy (Proxomitron). This happened before installing Comodo, so there was no 3rd-party firewall.
Update from C/P doesn't work with "No proxy" settings, and when I abort update manually, log stopped at "HttpGetWinsock(http://download840.avast.com/iavs5x/servers.def.vpx)". Is there some compatibility issue with winsock? ???

For now I can update my vps, but if I can do something to analysis this issue, I'm willing to help.
Here is a screen shot (avast.setup process on Process Explorer):

Seems I've fixed this (@least temporarily).. This is not a real troubleshooter, since I removed all of these in one move:
COMODO firewall
Spybot S&D
Malwarebytes Antimalware

Spywareblaster
SUPERAntispyware

I don't think S&D was the cause of the problem, it was uninstalled previously and nothing happened.. I cannot be sure for any of the others, I will try reinstalling one by one and check if Avast5 is blocked again from updating.. btw Spywareblaster is not a running app, I think it only sets some files in order to protect browsers.. and SUPERantispyware was not active all the time (I was calling it on demand).. dunno though if a service related to it was running all the time (will check previous hjt logs).. Will post asap when I reproduce the bug again. Thanks all!

It is very easy to circumvent that nag screen, and it appears that there's nothing in the license preventing one from doing so, although if you mention it on the Avira forum the Avira representatives there will suddenly start talking about the weather, if not worse.

But considering the amount of sobbing involved in trying to protect your computer, maybe the best solution would be to find a good source where you can purchase tissues wholesale.

Good luck.

This is absolutely insane.. I reinstalled all of the above progs, one by one, restarting the PC after each one's installation and trying to update the newly installed Avast5.. I even left COMODO as the last of them to be installed.. guess what, Avast5 is still updating fine!!! Auto, man whatever. This is crazy, I had installed v5 the first time (after uninstalling Avast4) a few months ago while all those progs were installed and some of them active during the installation.Avast5 worked fine regarding updating and it suddenly stopped on virus defs of April the 14th. From then, on no update was possible except through control panel.. And after uninstalling these progs AND Avast 5 and then reinstalling the AV again (AND ALL of them on top) the problem seems to be fixed.. I only hope this won't come up again!

hey vordme34,

We have to much fun, here! HUH?

Sounds Like Comodo and Avast 4 or 5 whatever is not enjoying each other still.

Maybe faster to wipe the drive and install OS over again after every UPDATE of Comodo?

How or where did you find the day of the stopped Updating of Avast?

Biggy Question. . .Can you tell if Comodo did a update on the day that Avast stopped updating?

OR did mr. billy's crew send a update to your computer on that day? Or Avast? WHO did the UPDATE that cause the problem?

SORRY . . . .To many questions.... but I've had to Re-install OS on TWO of billy's UPDATES cause System Restore couldn't roll back to working order.

Nope

>Sounds Like Comodo and Avast 4 or 5 whatever is not enjoying each other still.

They are fine now, thank you

>Maybe faster to wipe the drive and install OS over again after every UPDATE of Comodo?

OS reinstall is a pain in the ass. I'd never do it unless Win is practically DEAD. It's a really heavy system here.

>How or where did you find the day of the stopped Updating of Avast?

Huh? I presume the last date that's mentioned at the "Maintenance"->"Update" tab? I didn't say it stopped at that date, but AFTER that date. And assuming Avast updates almost daily it's a good guess don't you think?

>Biggy Question. . .Can you tell if Comodo did a update on the day that Avast stopped updating?

Unable to comply

>OR did mr. billy's crew send a update to your computer on that day? Or Avast? WHO did the UPDATE that cause the problem?
>I also thought of updates (COMODO? AV5? others?) but there's no way to prove this.. I'm no IT pro, just a simple user

There's something that's called "backup", guess you've heard of it??? And maybe of.. Linux?

I'm not a fan of Spybot S&D nor COMODO but you can choose your stuff.

Spybot S&D is good for removal of infections but is not good for realtime prevention like Malwarebytes.
