This thread is now obsolete - the new version has already been released, as 4.7.844.
Thanks.
Hi *,
this is already becoming a tradition. :) As usual, we're offering our forum members to test drive the upcoming avast update before it is official released.
How to install it (for starters - most people already know this trick anyway ): simply download and run the following program: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/aswbeta.exe . That's about all it takes (provided you have the latest version of avast Home/Pro already installed, of course).
This is a minor release, and doesn't bring any new big features. It should fix couple of bugs that were discovered since the last official update (such as incorrect display of non-Latin characters in avast tasks - although in some special cases, a reinstall of the program may be necessary to completely solve the problem). Also, we have added an AsProtect unpacker in this release (quite an interesting change) - so I'd like to ask everyone who installs this version to run a full on-demand scan of all your drives (with unpacking enabled) and report any respective problems (stalls, crashes etc).
Also, this build adds Danish language pack - so if there's anyone who speaks Danish here, it would be very helpful if he/she could install it and report any typos, grammatical errors etc (this applies to the program and the help files as well).
Thanks
Vlk

Two of the changes mentioned by Vlk (the Danish language pack and the ASProtect unpacker) are in the state of "being polished" - so they'll be slightly improved within the next few days.

ok, at least one:
have installed this build on two of my laptops. on both machines avast insisted to have the computer restarted two times.
and: on both machines the blue avast icon in system tray stopped spinning after the update. at firs ti thought this was indication non running providers, but avast control panel indicates that all providers are running smoothly and the "Last scanned: ..." item and "Scanned Count" is changing over time.
-
So, you restarted the machine after the update completed, and when the machine booted, you were prompted to restart again?
If so, please send me the file <avast>\setup\setup.log from such a machine...
Thanks

yes, when the machine rebooted, after login, avast asked me to restart the machine once again.
i did send setup logfile to you by email.
any idceas why the tray icon isn't spinning any more ("Animate the icon ..." in settings is checked)?

Can you give us a list of 'tests' to perform?
P.S. Just one reboot after its installation.
-

Well installed it without a problems, only one reboot was required.
Also I run a full system scan(unpacking was enabled) and everything went fine - no errors :)

I'm on KAV6 Beta atm, so i'll have to skip this one :-[

I have since re-installed avast on one of my two laptops showing the before mentioned strange upgrade behavior.
After I de-installed avast and rebooted, Windows Security Center still reported avast 4.7.838 as installed and virus database information as up-to-date. Funny. I double checked but no avast component was left on the system (no services, no nothing). Maybe this was because I used the stand-alone deinstaller (aswclear).
Before re-installing avast, I removed some avast relarted entries from the registry and deleted avast installation folders to start as clean as possible. While the newly installed version 4.7.827 could be painlessly updated to version 4.7.738 and only one reboot was necessary, I noticed that security settings on the installation folders are still pretty weak (yes, we're talking Windows XP here): While group Users had "Read&Execute, Read" permission on files on folder DATA, group Everyone had "Full Control". E. g. file avast.ini had User:Read&Exe and Everyone:FullControl. This does result in a plain FullControl for any user which might not be what is intended (or desireable). Other folders had a plain Everyone:FullControl ... - I would prefer much thighter security settings here.

Hurray!!!
Avast in Danish.
I have the beta up and running. No problems so far. Only that the avast seems to start up a little later than before. When my screen opens, I was used to see
the icon spinning, indicating that avast was running. Now it starts whit a icon whit the red circle, and then starts whit in 10 sek.
Haven't tried a scan yet. But I have some corrections to the translating.
1. when start up the "memory and startup test" translation is to long. "Stands hukkomelsest" is what I can see, but in fact there is missing 3 letters. it should say " stands hukkomelsestest" but there isn't room enough. And it look stupid. ;D
I suggest something shorter, like " stands test "
2. In settings > confirms > you missed a line. " ask before deliting files from chest " is not translated.
Could be something like " spørg før sletning af filer i viruskiste."
Thats it for now. I will now go fore the big scan.
See you later.
-
Question???
Unpacker enabled. Where do I find that checkbox.
-
I missed one error in translation.
In settings > confirms, the "subheadline" says " Fjern markeringer udfor bekræftelses-spørgsmålene.....and so on."
I am 99.99% sure that udfor is in two words. " ud for"
But only 99.99% :)
-
Ok. The GUI in " On-access beskyttelseskontrol" has a lot off errors in translation.
If you want me to, I can check it out, but for now I will wait for the improvement.
Where do I find the unpacker box.????
-
Installation on 3 computers at work went fine with only a single re-boot required.
One has finished scanning with no errors. Will post again when the others finish.
EDIT:
run a full on-demand scan of all your drives (with unpacking enabled)
Vlk,
I should have asked this before - do you mean just the default formats or should we enable all formats in a task window?
M
Edit #2: All scanned without any probelms based on the default formats.

drahnier,

Strange, really. The main Avast4 folder (i.e. the one with the binaries) should NOT have the Everyone/FullControl right. Only the DATA folder (and its subfolders). Isn't that the case on your machine?
Daffy, Igor will follow up with you (he handles avast translations). Thanks for the comments. The unpacker box -- I meant simply the "Scan archives" box in the Simple UI.
mauserme, thanks for testing.
Thanks
Vlk

Done and dusted. Full scan archives enabled, no problems or errors. Just one reboot after install.
-
Can you give us a list of 'tests' to perform?
Vlk, I'm not that often here in forums now but I still exists ;D
-
Technical, sorry :-[ :P
Can you give us a list of 'tests' to perform?
Well, I wish I could. But the changes are pretty subtle.
So (unless you speak Danish), the short list would be something like
- test scanning in Outlook/Exchange or ScriptBlocker provider when NOT logged on as an admin (there have been some fixes in this code to accomodate Vista beta 2)
- on-demand scan your whole hard drive, with archive scanning enabled
- check the access rights of your Avast4 folder. There should be no Everyone/FullControl entry.
That's about all I can think of from the top of my head right now...
Thanks
Vlk

Tryed with Simple User Interface, not a trouble. My Pro license is at one off-line computer right now, so, can't test the beta there.
- check the access rights of your Avast4 folder. There should be no Everyone/FullControl entry.
There isn't... :'(
I'm not using the default path, although it is a subfolder of %ProgramFiles%.
I have Full control to Administrators (group and my account) and System.
Normal Users could read/execute. Advanced Users could modify/write.
I'm using XP Pro SP2+ and *advanced* folder sharing option (not the simple one in Windows Explorer), if this concerns.
Thanks Vlk. I wish I could keep helping here in forums as much as I can.
-
OK.
I will keep an eye on this forum from time to time, if any help with translation are needed.
Scan archives. Oh!! So that was what it meant. :)
-
i have configured avast updates to "running mode: silent" and "show update progress", "show icon in taskbar tray" checked.
if i manually trigger an update as a user with administrative rights, i do see the little tray icon during update; running an update as limited user this icon is not displayed.
-
I've downloaded this beta, installed it and ran the full scan last night and no errors so far. I'm also running XP x64 so that part is still working too. Keep up the great work.
-
We have just updated the beta to build 4.7.840. To install it, simply invoke program update (if using the previous beta build) or follow the instructions in the first post of this thread.
There've been many changes in the Danish translation - so if you can read it, please have a look at it.
Thanks :)

Vlk, the name of the providers (in Portuguese) were corrected now, the same for the Task names (Pro version) I suppose.
Thanks 8)
-
I ran a full scan with the archives enabled, there was no problems with the beta for me. :)

Hi Vlk,
tested with 2 Systems (Workstation and Laptop) and XP and W2k and everything works fine :-)

Has anyone else tried to install this beta on win 95? I have tried it on two machines and it refuses to start once installed. The error (didn't write it down) said one of the Avast DLLs was linked to missing kernel32.dll. Version 4.7.827 works fine on the machines.
-
Oops, this looks like a bug. If you'd be able to give the exact names (of the avast dll and of the missing imports), it would help...
-
This is the error message:
The ASHBASE.DLL file is linked to missing export kernel32.dll:Try Enter Critical Section.

Vlk and Igor,
On the avast blue at the bottom right corner of the computer screen when I click the last button an Avast popup thing came up, can you add this tool for the final version comes if possible can you guys add schedule Boot-time scan on the popup menu.
Because I hate to click on the Avast icon at the desktop after the Avast software comes up and then click on the Avast pull down menu and then click schedule Boot-time scan, all I am saying is can you guys add on the Avast blue ball menu on the bottom right corner and add schedule Boot-time scan on the popup menu.
Cause it make a hell of a lot easy instead of doing it the long way what do you think Vlk and Igor, can you add this options to the final version for Home and Pro platform.
Just asking I am sure everybody might like the idea to add this option.
-
Adding individual entries from the simple user interface (SUI) menu to the right click context menu of the avast icon could make the list very large, especially when you add other peoples wish lists.
However, adding a link on the avast icon for the Simple User Interface 'Menu' would give much quicker access to a number of options that there like the Settings, Schedule Boot-Time Scan, Virus Chest, Virus Database, Log Viewer and Help. All of these options don't really require the running of the memory check and opening the SUI just to access them.
-
I think a sub-menu (with other options, cascaded) could solve the problem.
I really want to see there the boot time scanning, the Chest, Help... and so on.
Maybe an 'Advanced' item on the menu that open the second options. This could solve the long list on the major menu.
-
My pet hobby horse in the Wish List thread, was for the inclusion at the very least the Help option. For users to have to Run the SUI (or EUI) and click/find the menu and then the Help file is buried too deep. I know once the SUI is open users can use the F1 key (a common standard program help key) but not many know that. Some also never go the Start, All Programs, avast! Antivirus, Help, that too is buried too deep. When a user needs help they shouldn't have get out a shovel and start digging to find help.
So for me the whole context menu system needs to be reviewed with a view making it easier for users. Why go through the memory check opening the SUI and menu to look at the help file or virus chest.
-
... the Help file is buried too deep.
If you right click the VRDB icon and click "What is avast! VRDB" you'll go straight to the help file. I know its not the most obvious approach but it is quicker than others.
-
I agree that the context menu could be enhanced a bit (btw this won't happen in the upcoming version - sorry, it's too late) but if you're interested, you can even place an icon to schedule the boot-time scan on your desktop.
Simply create a shortcut to the following
C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\sched.exe /A:*
This will schedule the boot-time scan (for all areas, ie. all local hard drives).
Thanks
Vlk
