Title: Avast want do a scan
Post by: crofty59 on January 14, 2007, 03:16:33 PM
Hi

I have tried to do a scan today and it will not work.
I right click the avast ball and click Start Avast Virus,

The hour glass shows up then dissapears and nothing happens.

I check Windows Task manager and find
ashAvast.exe and it is running at 100%, to stop this i must click stop this task.

I have tried a repair, uninstalled and reinstalled but to no avail.

I am using version 4.7.936 .
I have only ever had this happen after i updated this program .

Cheers

Crofty, there are some issues in the last version.
It would be better wait for the next upgrade, possibly tonight.
Which firewall are you using?

I am using zone alarm Free.
No problem... Old Comodo versions have some issues with avast and CPU usage. Not anymore.
By the way, what happens if you run C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashSimp2.exe ?

Just start Windows Explorer, navigate to avast! installation folder and start the mentioned executable (ashSimpl.exe, or ashSimp2.exe)
Does it work?

By "installation folder" I actually meant the program folder.

So, ashSimp2.exe (the skin-less Simple User Interface) works, but ashSimpl.exe (the skinned Simple User Interface) doesn't?
What is the splash screen supposed to start - the skinned, or skinless Simple UI?
(i.e. what do you have on the first page of program settings - is the option "Enable skins for Simple User Interface" checked or not?)

Crofty, Igor is asking if you have checked 'Enable skins for Simple User Interface' like below...

Uncheck the two options for 'Enable skins...'. Click ok.
Boot.
Can you scan with avast after that?

I noticed in one of your replies you mentioned Comodo Firewall.
I am downloading there latest RC3 2.4.153, (size 7.92MB)

have you or anyone else tried this release, or would you recommend someone like me wait to the final release.

I went to download ZA free Version7 : But it is 58mb and i am on dial up , i feel this is too big.

Sorry for being so long winded.

Now there is 2.4.14.157 RC4
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download/CFP_Setup_English_2.4.14.157_RC4.exe

But if the RC3 is working, stay with it and wait the final release.
The Comodo updates are very quickly nowadays, each 2 days...  ::)

I unchecked the two options for Enable Skins still will not scan.
I have version 4.7.398 installed.
I updated to this version and then i tried again uninstalled and reinstalled.

I can do scans by going to Avast installation folder and click on ashSimp2.exe, but (ashSimpl.exe Will not run.)

Boot scans and right click a folder and click scan with avast works etc.

I have windows xp SP2

Strange... the skin is not opening...
Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

Try either to register ACTSKIN4.OCX
Follow the instructions:

Select START > RUN...
Enter the following command:
If you have Windows NT or 2000: C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
If you have Windows 95, 98 or ME: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
If you have Windows XP: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
If you have Windows x64: C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX

Press OK (or Enter).
A message saying that the file was successfully registered should appear...

For some reason, ActiveSkin (the 3rd party library avast uses for skinning) does not seem to be working on your system.

We are now on build .942 I don't know if this will resolve the problem as issues are with the third party skinning are usually outside avast.

So, you have the option "Use skins for Simple User Interface" unchecked. If you start ashSimp2.exe directly, everything is OK. If you start the splash screen (ashAvast.exe), it performs the memory scan and then, when it should start ashSimp2.exe afterwards, it doesn't do anything (and ashAvast.exe still "sits" in the list of running processes)... do I understand it correctly?

Yes If i click ashSimp2.exe directl it works fine.

No If i click start the splash screen (ashAvast.exe)  It will just show the hour glass then it sits in process till  i go to end task in Task Manager. ..... Exactly the same as if i click Avast ball and go to Start Avast Anti Virus.

i go to end task in Task Manager.
At that time, ashavast.exe takes all the CPU or not?
Do you use PrevX, ProcessGuard, SSM or any other low level security program?

@Igor: seems the same behavior of Comodo drivers blocking the avast startup.

Crofty, if you open the task manager (ctrl+alt+del)
File > Save (or Save as) and take a list of the running processes in your computer.
Paste it here (in parts if necessary).

Crofty, if you open the task manager (ctrl+alt+del)

This is where my lack of Knowledge comes in
I go to Task Manager click on file and all i can see is New Task and End Task Manager

Cannot find save or save as

I have put this link in about Task manager hope it helps

There isn't a save as on mine either, so it isn't just you.

If you have created an image it would be just as easy to either attach it to the post or have the link show the image in the post. By clicking the Additional Options text you can attach an image. With these options the image/s are available to those without having to open another window or tab.

Example of displaying the image located in another location like tinypic.com.
Code: [Select]

I was going to use this example to display the image, but it is quite large and would probably have been better  left as two images than combined.

Please try to create the dump of the frozen ashAvast.exe process. So,
- simulate the problem
- when ashAvast.exe is frozen (present in the task list), download and run hangrep.exe (http://public.avast.com/~vlk/hangrep.exe). Select ashAvast.exe in the list of processes and use the Save button. This will generate a dump file... so please upload it to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming
Let's see if it gives us any hint.

If you opened the incoming folder in IE (or other browser), I think it should be enough to drag&drop the dumpfile somewhere into the window - and it gets uploaded (at least that's how it works for IE).

If you have "Index of ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming" shown, you should be in the right folder. So, dropping the file somewhere into the bottom right part of the window should do.
How big is the dump file, btw?

Interesting.
A few more questions:
1. Do I understand it correctly that the splash screen doesn't even show if you click "Start avast! Antivirus" - i.e. no memory scanning occurs?
2. How long did you wait from "starting" the splash screen until you generated the dump? I certainly don't need it precisely, just would like to know if it was something like 2 seconds, or more like a minute.

Yes that is correct splash screen doesn't show, no memory scan.

I waited about 10 Seconds before i generated the dump.

I will be disconnected shortly so that will be me for now, Thanks for your assistance

OK. Please try the following:
1. Open avast! installation folder in Explorer (or any other file manager you use) and rename the file ashUInt.dll to something else (e.g. ashUInt.dl_)
2. Download this file:
http://public.avast.com/~glucksmann/ashUInt.dll
and put it into avast! installation folder, instead of the original one.

Now, try to start avast! (splash) again... does it help?

It probably will [do again].
avast! setup noticed an unauthorized change of the library and put the original one back (and asked for a reboot); I just wanted to know if it makes any difference.

I'll put a better file online in a while ;)

http://public.avast.com/~glucksmann/ashUInt.zip

So, similarly to the previous case - rename the original ashUInt.dll file in avast! installation folder (so that you can replace it), and extract the content of this ZIP archive into avast! folder (there are 2 files inside). The installer should keep this file until a new version of avast! is released.

I have now placed both the files in Avast Folder, Scan is working okay ETC Splash , Memory Scan.

You have been very patient with me and i sincerely thank you for your assistance.

This is why Avast Forums is the best forum out there.

We should thank you for your help - it helped us to find the problem.

It was a "strange" piece of code that wasn't really correct... what is even more strange, however, is that you (and possibly a very few others) were the only ones having the problems. The code hasn't changed for years, and it works for millions of users correctly. I have no idea what's so special about your computer ;)

Hi
When i booted up the computer today
This is the first reboot since i installed the 2 files from the zip folder.

For some reason Avast has gone back to how it was before.
If i click right click the avast ball and then click Start Avast Anti virus hour glass appears and i have to end task in Task manager.

I reloaded the files in the zip folder and they said did i want to update etc as they were already there, i said yes to both one changed Okay the other one could not be changed as it said file in use or it is a hidden file.

http://public.avast.com/~Gilkson/Ashanti.zip

I hope i haven't made it worse by attempting to reinstal these 2 files.

Here Are the ashUInt files in my Avast Instalation Folder
ashUInt
ashUInt.dl
ashUint.dll
ashUInt.dll sum
Cheers

I couldn't find (download) this file...

No, don't worry. You can repair your avast installation any time.

Here Are the ashUInt files in my Avast Instalation Folder
ashUInt
ashUInt.dl
ashUint.dll
ashUInt.dll sum
The first two files are, for me, strange.
But, anyway, wait for Igor's instructions.

The Igor's zip file does only have the last two files, not the two first ones that you're listing and I think they could be deleted  ::)

Strange... are you saying that setup put back the original versions anyway?
Please try again...
- delete all the versions of ashUInt you can from your installation folder (you won't be able to delete the currently loaded one; the additional file that normally are not there are leftovers from the "renaming" operation - they can safely be deleted).
- start avast! update manually (it won't update if you have already the latest version installed, but it will check the files and possibly do the replacement)
- if asked for reboot, reboot
- now, do what I wrote previously (rename ashUInt.dll, and extract the ZIP file there instead)
- now, invoke another manual update... does avast! ask you for restart, or not?

It is possible that I didn't sign the file correctly, but I think I did...

I have just down as requested.
Done manual program  update,... did not ask for reboot.
Renamed ashUInt.dll
Placed the contents of the zip file in Avast Folder
Invoked another manual  program update,.. Did not ask for a restart.

Everything is working fine now.

You can take a lot of credit yourself for the work you did in presenting the information to enable the fix, which not only helped you may also help others in the future when this is applied in a future program update.

Thanks for the kind words DavidR

Still on some forums they would not have the patience as this forum does. As well as the may we help attitude.

I have said before and i will say it again this forum is the best Forum i have ever used.

People make a forum and Avast forum have such friendly and informative members.
It is a treat every time I visit the forum.

Cheers
