Title: New Product Testing: New installer and updater for Avast Antivirus
Post by: slavo.benko on April 28, 2021, 11:16:29 AM
Hello, dear beta testers.

We've just released a free beta testing of a new installer and updater for Avast Antivirus (21.3.6164.386), and we're asking for your help.

Could you please install it and try it out? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated - thank you!

What is new
Brand new installer and updater for faster installation and update times. The installed Antivirus is the same as in regular Beta release, except it might be a version behind for now.

Target audience
Experienced Beta users with a heart for adventure.

What to expect
The brand new installer and updater.
After installation, the Beta updates will have different timing. The update channel is separate, and updates are released with slightly different timing now. We will sync the releases in near future.

How can you help
Simply download and install.
You can also try installing and uninstalling some AV components, start a repair installation, reinstall, or uninstall scenario and install it again.
Please report your feedback, especially when something unexpected happens. There is a list of known issues below.

How to report unexpected behavior
Please zip these two folders and include a screenshot. Thank you!
If you want to revert to current installer
Uninstall this version (via Add/Remove programs in Windows), then download and install regular Beta installation package.
Use the Clear tool to remove installation completely, if everything else fails.

Hi, just tried this new one. :)

[Installation]
Maybe because of firewall, something went wrong with the installer. Is "Error: 111111" correct? (icarus_installer.png)
Character encoding of log window must be wrong, part of error messages (possibly Japanese) became unreadable. (icarus_installer2.png)

[After reboot]
Avast not activated after reboot. A few minutes later, it finally activated. (failed2.png)

[Program Update]
When trying program update, settings panel just closes. (FTP: update_20210428_230603.mp4)

Logs are on the FTP: NON_log.7z.

Hello NON,

than you very much for your report. Our developers will check your logs and hopefully we will find what caused this issue. I would like to ask you:
1) Am I correct that you reinstalled original Avast AV BETA build (21.4) with this new package?
2) can you please tell me what firewall is install/enabled on your machine? Avast FW? + I noticed you mentioned "Evorim Free Firewall" in your machine description. Is it also installed and enabled? It can be related to curl errors in your log

Thank you

Lukas

Hi Lukas,

1) Am I correct that you reinstalled original Avast AV BETA build (21.4) with this new package?
I originally used beta build 21.4 but this new installer installs 21.3.6164 instead.
Installed over beta 21.4, not clean install.

Yes, Avast firewall and Evorim firewall are both enabled. I allowed avast's installer but maybe it's too late.

Hello,

today we published new AV 21.4.6213.426 build to this BETA channel. Can you please wait for automatic application update or start update manually and let us know if it finished successfully? (You can check for example version in Avast UI -> Menu -> About. There should be 21.4.6213 version instead of 21.3.6164). Thank you

Lukas

Checked for update, saw the image that looks as though it was looking for an update.
Next received a message to restart the computer.
After the system restarted, I was greeted with this,
(https://d1ka0itfguscri.cloudfront.net/Lh/2021/05/04/13/03/crhfIeVeMTi/preview.jpg)
Refreshing the screen brought up the UI with a message that the
program was out of date and needed to be updated.
I selected the update option but no update just the normal screen
and the system is protected. Here's the current about screen.

Updated.
Firstly AvastUI tray-icon shows blue (new notification) but main UI did not show anything. After some UI open-close, suddenly "Restart required" popup appeared, and main UI turned as well. No glitch after restart here, except for Program Update UI one (same as 21.3.6164).

It installed without any problems. I really like how it now installs fully and shows progress within single popup from start to end. Before, even when popup above taskbar was gone, it was still installing stuff with another progress bar within the interface and it really wasn't done well. This is much better. When popup above taskbar disappears, it's fully installed. I like that.

I do have a complaint though. Under "Custom" install, those "Minimal" and "Recommended" buttons on the right edge of installer feel totally out of place there. Place them between the introduction text and all the checkboxes. Anywhere but where they are would be better quite frankly. Would prefer if it was a button with text only. Having to hover over icons to see what they even are is an unnecessary step.

Just for your info:
- (random) issue with "111111" screen after reinstall of legacy/current setup by new setup - already solved in our INTERNAL build, fix should be released during NEXT program update to 21.5 version
- issue that main UI page is opened if you click on "Check for updates" from "Update" settings - already solved in our INTENRAL build, fix should be released during NEXT program update to 21.5 version
- issue that "In 10 minutes" item could not be selected from "Remind me later" of restart dialog - already solved in this build, you can try it
- issue with bad user experience with "Minimal" and "Recommended" buttons on "Custom install" setup screen - we agreed that its not ideal. We will try to adjust it in some NEXT program update

Hello, yes we have removal tool also for AV product installed via new installer but some functionality is missing there (for example ask dialog if product should be removed from windows safe mode etc.) so we have not published new removal tool yet. Do you really need it? (-> your product is broken and uninstall does not work?) or you are only curious / you want to test it. I can send you download link in case that your AV is broken but I hope this is not this case :)

I checked it on my machine with installed AV from this BETA channel and I can confirm that .439 is number of downloaded micro-update. You can check "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Avast Software\Avast\MicroUpdates" in your registry. There should be "439" value which affected last number in "program version" displayed in AV UI

Hi Lukas, is it on purpose that version# and build# are the same now or is it a bug..?

Hi Asyn, it is not bug. AV based on current/old (Instup) setup uses two versions in AV UI. For example 21.4.2464 (build 21.4.6266). New (Icarus) setup currently uses only single version so there is for example 21.4.6266 (build 21.4.6266.0) in AV UI. On the other hand we know that showing two almost identical versions in UI (only last number can differ) is not ideal so we will discuss it/adjust it. Thank you for your report

Hello, according to your screenshots it seems that you are running AV on older (Instup) setup and not on new (Icarus) setup we are testing here but its OK. if you send me your application logs I will resend them to proper team. Can you please collect and share all files from these folders? Thank you

c:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\
c:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Persistent Data\Avast\Logs\

You can also use our "Avast Support Tool" for collecting logs. See more info here: https://support.avast.com/en-ww/article/33/

Hi guys, today we published new AV 21.4.6266.562 build to this BETA channel. Can you please wait for automatic application update or start update manually and let us know in case of any issue?
Hi Lukas, is it on purpose that version# and build# are the same now or is it a bug..?
Hi Asyn, it is not bug. AV based on current/old (Instup) setup uses two versions in AV UI. For example 21.4.2464 (build 21.4.6266). New (Icarus) setup currently uses only single version so there is for example 21.4.6266 (build 21.4.6266.0) in AV UI. On the other hand we know that showing two almost identical versions in UI (only last number can differ) is not ideal so we will discuss it/adjust it. Thank you for your report
Thanks Lukas, that explains it.

Hello nadimmahmudkitkat1, I have this information for you

1) problem with "0000000-0" VPS version in AV UI - its already reported problem in our bug tracking system and hopefully it will be fixed soon
2) problem with activating AntiTrack subscription - its already reported problem in our bug tracking system. We are waiting for fix
3) unfortunately I still have no information related to your FW issue. I would recommend you to try uninstall your current AV and install it again. It might help
4) I am afraid that I can not help you with high system resources usage of AntiTrack app. Can I ask you to report this issue to AntiTrack forum: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=97.0

I would also like to inform you that your AV is NOT running on our new installer we are testing here so it would be better to report issues like these here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2.0 (forum section for our production users). There are more people watching that forum and who can help you better than I can do here

I'm sorry I don't have better news for you

Hi, is it possible that this is regular virus database update? If not, can you please collect and share icarus logs with me?

@lucas.munduch,
I'm still getting the daily notice that the program needs to update and there aren't any further updates.
Selecting to do the updates does nothing except change my status from unsafe to safe.
You already have my logs. Any new information? Thanks

Yep, it seems so. But why would it need to download over 120 MB daily for a VPS update..!? Smells like a bug... ;)

Hello, I got your logs from Petr Matelesko but unfortunately there were only applications logs in package and not setup (Icarus) logs from c:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Icarus\Logs\. On the other hand from what I saw on screen you posted in different topic you were correctly updated to the latest build and problem seemed to be "only" in UI dialog which offered you another update even if you were already up-to-date so we agreed with Petr that UI team will look on it. I will ask him if there is some progress.

Meantime you can re-check your current build version in AV UI. There should be 21.4.6266 version which is the latest published build in this BETA channel. If yes, it indicates that you are correctly updated and issue is in UI component. If not, can you please collect Icarus setup logs from: c:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Icarus\Logs\? Thank you

Thank you for your logs. We found out that you really downloaded around 200 MB virus definition update today. Problem is that our build system is not currently providing diffs (small update files) for every downloaded file and for every user so its the reason why update can be so big (at least for some users). It should be improved in future (definitely before we publish build to production). One more question for you. We also noticed that your previous virus definitions were few days old. Is it possible that you dont use "automatic" update setting for virus definitions and you started update manually today? Thank you

I use "Automatic" update and I don't know why it didn't work. I noticed "Virus definition out of date" alert and initiated manual update, which downloaded lots of data.
And the machine is active in this 24h so there should be enough time to update  :-\

Hi guys, today we published new AV 21.5.6354 build to this BETA channel. Build includes fix in setup that sometimes AV UI could not be loaded after program update and OS restart. It was very random issue. I think that "only" bob3160 was able to induce it but can you please let us know if issue was/was not fixed? Thank you very much

bob3160: Yes, I am aware of it but its different issue and it is investigated by AV UI team. Unfortunately we still don't know why is this happening on your machine and we are not able to induce it :(

Guys, is there someone else who induced issue that there is information in UI that AV needs update even if product is already up-to-date?

Hello, we redesigned "Minimal" / "Recommended" buttons on "Customize installation" screen. Thank you again

Hi bob, good news. We were finally able to induce issue with "Important update available" info in UI of up-to-date product on our machines. Can you please check this registry value?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AVAST Software\Avast\properties\settings\Common\ProgramUpdateAvailable=1

This value should be related to this issue. Please let me know if value is present in your registry. You can also manually change it to 0 (with disabled Self-Defense) as temporary workaround. It should help. We will try to fix it as soon as possible of course

Ok, although personally, I'd do it like so. Either way, I'd center the checkboxes below to the text above it and not align them with the Recommended/Minimal buttons.
