I've got Chi's same problem: the program doesn't work. Last week it was OK, but now it doesn't scan appears an orange bar and then the splash screen closes. I followed the instructions in FAQ, tried to repair and finally reinstalled Avast, but it still has problems.
I have XP and a program called Spybot, no other antivirus.
-
Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
-
Done.
See attachment, and thank you anyway.
-
I can't take a conclusion by the analysis of your setup.log... sorry, sometimes nothing is done, sometimes checkings are done but the version is updated.
Did you have any other antivirus in the past in this computer?
Do you use a firewall?
-
I had NOD32 and...does Spybot Search and Destroy count?
Firewalls...well, I have the Windows one.
-
I had NOD32
Wow... for sure two antivirus at the same time will conflict!
You need to fully remove one of them!
-
I have uninstalled it, and besides Avast! worked for about two weeks after the installation.
-
I suggest an installation from the scratch:
1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.
-
Sorry, I'm late.
I did all and still doesn't work. The log is in the attachment.
-
So you decided to use avast right? If yes try uninstall avast(Follow as Tech said) and the other anti-virus installed on your system. Then reinstall avast on your system and i saw this on your log (general License key generated Demo) Did you register the key for avast?
-
Follow rassel's suggestion.
But seems that these aren't the latest lines of the log... but the first ones...
-
Log shows that installation at 28.04.08 was quite successfull. So the problems are arising during AV start. Probably it is necessary to look at Windows log in Event Viewer and search for error events during services start.
-
Re-installed again and still not working.
Everything seems normal, but when I use Internet the red circle appears. And it just can't work: the same orange bar appears and then nothing.
Ok, Event Viewer. I've found this:
Tipo evento: Errore
Origine evento: avast!
Categoria evento: (4)
ID evento: 90
Data: 02/05/2008
Ora: 16.50.16
Utente: N/D
Computer: XPSP2
Descrizione:
AAVM - scanning error: Aavm: FetchGlobalCounters cannot open mapping - server DOWN???, 00000002.
Is it interesting?
-
Can you try if the latest beta version solves this?
Download the updater (http://files.avast.com/files/beta/aswbeta.exe) and run it or go here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34612.msg290254#msg290254) for more information.

"Cannot write file". My computer is becoming boring.
I uninstalled and installed the new version, but the situation is the same.
But I've found a "Symantec_Lan.exe" in my WINDOWS folder: remaining of a past antivirus? I can't delete it.

Did you use Norton at anytime?
1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Norton_Removal_Tool_for_Windows_2000XPVista/1169144666/1). Boot.
3) Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.
-
Guess what..it was infected. I've deleted it.
Avast! seems to be able to scan single files or folders and delete dangerous files, but I can't put an infected file in the Virus Chest: "error RPC"
-
The RPC error is often related to having another AV or remnants of another AV on your system so it would be worth trying the Tool Tech mentioned just in case.
-
Ladies and gentlemen, Avast finally works!
A worrying red icon from Windows security center told me my antivirus was outdated, so I updated it again, booted...and the circle disappeared! Now it works, even though I still have problems scanning from splash screen.
Thank you everybody, you've been very kind and patient.
-
Happy that you stuck at it and all is OK after a fashion.
What are the splash screen scan problems you mention ?

What are the splash screen scan problems you mention ?
When I click "Hard disks" it doesn't scan. I have to use "selezione cartella" and choose folders.
-
Clicking Hard Disks won't start the scan, only select to scan them you have to click the media style play button to start the scan.
Is that what you did ?
-
Yes, and then the splash screen closes.
-
Which splash screen are we talking about ?
The Simple User Interface (SUI) isn't a splash screen, it requires you to close it at the end of the scan or are you saying the SUI disappears ?
A splash screen is something like what appears as a program loads and disappears once loaded.
If it is the SUI disappearing, does it minimise to the Task Bar or completely disappear. Are there any errors in the avast log viewer, Warning or Error sections ?
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
-
I've repaired the installation, now it's OK.
Thanks again.

You're welcome.
Glad that things are OK, thanks for the feedback.

Yes, it didn't find other files.
