- solved a bug related to the AutoSandbox offer (WinXP)
- gadget can now be removed by simply closing it
- solved a compatibility problem with GameGuard and sXe
- SafeZone improvements
- improved sandbox logging
- SafeZone is now a standalone setup package (can be installed/uninstalled separately)
- improvements in password processing
- improvements in the program uninstaller
- solved a memory leak in the avast gadget
- fixes in the File System Shield transient cache
- various stability/compatibility improvements

Many thanks to everyone who helped testing.

Pro AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe

Or, you can use the in-product "program update" feature (this applies to all v5.x and 6.0 users, including those who are running any of the previous betas).

Note: If you have any problems with this new version, please do NOT post to this thread; start a new topic instead. Ideally one topic per issue.

Thanks

Is this official official? As in not beta? Is it best to uninstall our current versions or is it fine just to use the internal updater?

It is official (as in "not beta"), and it should be safe to use the in-product updater.

- setup programs now smaller by ~20%
<snip>

The actual setup of avast free has 63.2 MB.
The setup of avast! free version 6.0.1000 has 55 MB.

Did it reduce something after all?

The virus database, contained in the setup package, grows continuously, as new detections are added - so if a new 6.0.1000 package was generated now, it would be bigger (besides, there are probably some additions to the program - there are new voiceovers in one or two languages, if we're talking about multi-language setup).

Same here, WMP still broken. Which was expected.
Anyway, it is not the red color only, it is that all the related preferences are dead, they show but they don't have any effect. Same for the "reset to default" button, dead.

Although I still have the red colour, by going to view skin chooser, if I change the skin to revert, then immediately close wmp, the next time I open it, and go to full view it is in the normal blue colour. Unfortunately as soon as I close and then re-open again, it's back to red.  Re-installing Avast 5 returns wmp to normal operation.

Decided to torture the installer a bit again.  Removed the Firewall component of AIS, rebooted, and reinstalled OA++.  Will see how long that is stable this time; so far it is working fine, but next update of either program may cause problems.

i MAY have found a bug, but it MAY be some "problem" by design aswell...

i am running windows 7 x64 enterprise sp1 german edition and installed (some time ago already) avast free v6.0.1000
from scratch with the settings you can see on screenshot avset1 i attached.

now as you can see, i unchecked to install the web rep plugin, since i have no use for it (using WOT instead)

what i saw now with Autoruns v10.07 (screen avset2) is that there's still 2 .dll's being installed related
to this plugin, and i wonder, if this is a mistake/bug or wanted by design, since it's browser helper objects for IE?

my second question would be if i can safely remove those 2 entries without needing to worry that avast av wouldn't start anymore or not?

i know this is the thread for v6.0.1091 but the bug persists after upgrading to it aswell and i am for sure too lazy to install v6.0.1091 from scratch just to test, if this behaivor exists there aswell. just for info.

regards

Wow, the bar was raised again for all the other AV's out there, especially for the free ones  ;D ;D ;D!

Updated via UI from .1086 and it's running flawlessly.
Then I uninstalled the whole thing and made a clean install of the downloaded full version. No problems either!

Good shot, thanks to developers and VLK  :D!
Keep up the perfect performance!

You could try a custom reinstall of the latest version 6.0.1091 using the link at the start of this topic. When installing uncheck the Script Shield and continue with the custom install. This should act as a workaround so WMP11 works, this 'uninstall' of the script shield can be reversed once they have managed to identify the exact cause/interaction/conflict.

I just got another "Your Connection Was Reset" error while in this site.   This seems to be happening several times a week lately.  No idea what the cause is.  You can see my computer's configuration below in my signature.

Often this means that something happened to your Hosts File.

I ran the MSFT "Fix it tool" that resets the Hosts File.

We shall see what happens

Thanks, working fine so far.
Just one question: what happened to the localized installers????
I could only find the multi-lang installer (which is considerably bigger, plus I don't need any other language than spanish).
or it's just temporary as the servers are updated with the new ver?

OR were the localized installers dropped in favor of the multi-lang one?

c ya!

Vlk, some user is getting this warning when firewall driver is being installed (see attached image)

He said that it worked fine before but it started in beta build 1086 and same for official 1091. Were there any internal changes to this or do you maybe have any idea what might have caused this?

@ Ashish Singh,

FYI in future posts, just click the Modify button to add on to your previous post.  Thanks.  ;)

When you change versions of Avast, it is normal for the program to want to update to the most current definitions.  It appears from your screen shot that it was in the middle of doing this.  After the update was complete from a clean install, you should reboot if you had not done so already (from the clean install) and registered the product.

Is all working properly now?  If not, reboot and then open the GUI and check.

Thanks for removing the social networking functions!! :D

Cheers!

Thank you for the information - the problem you reported has been already fixed,
it should not appear when installing build 1091 on clean system.

Although deleting mentioned registry entries is possible, I would recommend
to install and uninstall webrep feature to clean up everything.

I like Avast, I use the free version, but this upgrade caused the mouse to not work starting a game called Grand Fantasia in the sandbox, starting the game normally the mouse works, Grand Fantasia uses gameguard, Crossfire a military shooter game uses xtrap, which got an error when I attenpted to start it after the upgrade in the sandbox, after reboot it seems to be fine.

It is not the portable version, it is the standard install, and avast is not recognising it.

There is an ini setting, "Browser2Installed=0" but I am not sure if changing this value would force an install...that would be one for a dev ;)

I'd say that's a good choice. Sure that single one is slightly larger, but on a general scale you don't need to host 2GB of installers where just what, like 500MB is enough for all editions. Plus the overal bandwidth should go down as well. And easier to maintain as you don't have so many different installers.

I can confirm that unistalling script shield via control panel, add remove programs gets rid of the red windows media player problem for those affected with Windows XP SP3.  I didn't have to uninstall Avast and do a custom install.  Everything seems fine until it gets fixed in the future.

Are you sure that you downloaded the setup of the same product?

Ya and i just noticed that the set up file was compiled again (i think).
I think this because my download manager shows the date of file modified on server and I downloaded again and it is showing me 19-Apr-2011 4 PM NOTE: I downloaded on 20 Apr @ 11 Am Indian Time zone.. So that could be the possible reason which made the setup file even more smaller.

Hi Avast Team,

I have had couple of BSODs on my system last week. My [Exclusion Settings] for "File System Shield" and its default settings were all gone. I would like to know if this is normal with new version of Avast? Shall I restore Avast to its factory defaults every time I encounter a system crash or bsod? Can those settings be saved somehow?

If I am not mistaken, I don't think version 6.0.100 had that issue. But I started to notice the problem after upgrading to 6.0.1044, 6.0.1085 and now 6.0.1091.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

BTW, I am running Avast Free 6.0.1091 on XP Sp3 with ZoneAlarm Pro 8.0.400.020

I apologise if this is a silly question, but I would like to know if the additional features like webrep etc. are installed by defalt in version 6 or whether they can be optional? I have the latest version 5 which I have had no issue with across 3 machines - 2 XPSP3 and 1 W7SP1 64bit - and would like to have a stress free update if I decide to change from the brilliant version 5, which does everything I need. I have read a lot about issues with version 6, especially the webrep and community options etc. Is it possible to update to version 6 without all these (apparently) buggy extras?

Good catch. Yes, you're right. The original installers (from April 18) didn't use the new compression scheme yet. The new ones, that are now available for download, are using the new compression scheme. Of course, the product is the same if you use either of the installers.

With your browser, this is because webshield cannot scan https connection.
The only detection avast made with https protocol is by File System Shield, not by Web Shield.
So, this is normal behavior, don't worry about it.

With IDM, yes you have to do as Dieselman says.
But at least avast should detect eicar.com with File System Shield, no matter what protocol you use.

Yes. You can install the WebRep plugin manually (to any Chrome build) by using the file

C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\WebRep\Chrome\AswWebRepChrome.crx

While I am fully aware that I can download this latest program update manually via the application GUI, I was wondering when Auto Update would catch this new version and automatically download/install it?  I imagine there are quite a few novices out there who are probably not even aware there is a new version available, and while it would probably be in their best interests to get this update, the average home computer user will probably never even know it exists?

Thanks,       -kd5-

Well to start with, it shouldn't download and install automatically unless you have changed the settings, Program updates are set to ASK when an update is available.

Now we get to the nitty gritty bit, there is an update cycle to spread the load on the hundreds of update servers; all the millions of active users couldn't all update at the same time. It could take a few days to cover all of those, which is where regular forum members are at an advantage. They find out about the update early and can do a manual update rather than wait for their turn in the cycle.

e.g. when downloaded some huge archive via download manager, then auto-scanning it with ashquick - to be aware if it still being processed

what i ask for is e.g. /v or -v like verbose to show progress bar with details on the scan
it could be even indication on the avast icon, another icon or just the

I always set Avast! to automatically download application updates because from past experience people will just choose to do it later then it never gets done.  This way it just downloads and installs, and if it tells people they need to restart their computers then eventually they will.  I set mine and my wife's to automatically download & install application updates as well, that way it just gets done.

As far as your answer to my question goes, thank you for that information, I very much appreciate it!       -kd5-

The reason why I have Program Updates set to ask rather than automatic is that I'm a gamer and very often am in full screen games where something downloading and attempting to install itself could cause a very annoying problem at a crucial time when 9 (or even 24 sometimes) other people are expecting me to do my part and get something done. I'm not fully sure that the gaming mode of Avast! stops anything but notification popups. I'm not sure it delays downloading of the AV updates for example (I think it should) but they are very small compared to a full Program update.

i got in mind that asqhquick.exe is now just return result window if anything found,

i assume that's intended but is there any way how force it show progress if it does lot of scanning ?
e.g. when downloaded some huge archive via download manager, then auto-scanning it with ashquick - to be aware if it still being processed

what i ask for is e.g. /v or -v like verbose to show progress bar with details on the scan
it could be even indication on the avast icon, another icon or just the

I'm afraid the ashquick.exe tool doesn't contain any UI stuff - so it can't really display the progress.
Putting an additional icon into the tray... well, that would be doable, but when I imagine the time & effort our graphics guy devotes to creating every icon, I somehow doubt that would happen  :)  (besides, I'm sure some wouldn't have an additional icon there, so it would mean implementing some options to enable/disable that... etc.)

Besides, up till now, there was actually no progress computed/shown for single file scans - it was 0% before the file has been scanned, 100% afterwards, nothing in between. The progress was always shown only if multiple files were being scanned.
A few days ago, I added the computation of the progress for single-file scans of most archive types (but, it's based on the assumption that the archive contains a number of files on the first nesting level; if it doesn't - e.g. there's only one big file in the archive, or it's not an archive at all - there's no progress again).

Yea, you can either update through the GUI by checking with the forum when a new version comes out, open the GUI, and than click "Update Program" or you can wait and get pop-up update notices that tell you when an update is available.

So are update notices now in the query for those people who are still running 4.8?  5.0-5.1? or the first version of 6.0?

Turn-around time to get the whole world on the pop-up update notifications can take up to 6 months.  Now my understanding is that when the update servers are ready in your part of the world, and you have updates set to "Ask" for new program versions, you will get the pop-up prompt within 24 hours after it is ready, and at 12 hour random intervals until you download it.

But I am not sure of the exact cycles.  I like how the update notices for the program are set to "Ask" so you are not forced to take them, and can come to the forum to see if other people have issues or bugs and than decide if problems are none to minimal to download the new version.

Updated via the GUI from 1044 to 1091 on my XP-H machine.  Update went smoothly until the reboot when machine froze and had to force close and restart.  Noticed upon restart that Avast v.1091 was working properly but had eliminated one of my exclusions (Prevx) under Settings only.  As a result, Prevx was now disabled and my firewall was taking it's sweet time booting up.  I quickly added in the exclusion into Avast and checked all other settings.  Rebooted again and now all is fine except that .1091 does take a little bit longer to boot up than previous versions but I'm not complaining for the extra protection.

I still have to upgrade on other machines with different OS's and set ups, so will let you know how they go.  Thanks.

Chrome uses Windows internet settings - that will be the reason.
FF has it's own.

Thank you AVAST team!!
I have downloaded and installed Avast 6.0.1091 on both of my Dell's.  One was still Avast 5.0 and the other was Avast 6.0.1000.  They both installed perfectly. Both were downloaded over the other program, not a clean install.  No problems with WMP 11 on either. Then I installed the latest free ZoneAlarm on my desktop Dell with no problems.
I am very pleased.  Thank you for offering this software to home users for free.
Becky

Upgraded my mom's emachine XP home x64, with free, avast 6.0.1091. Went smoothly, no problems,  WMP 11, no problems.  It is well worth the wait.  Thanks Avast!  You are appreciated.

I ran into this issue couple of weeks ago,and the issue is I believe caused by installing SP1 for Windows 7 x64.Avast slows down my internet traffic (Youtube and other video streaming services especially). Are you aware of this issue? Are you working on getting it fixed? When I turn of the web shield, everything speeds up and youtube loads up much faster.

For me it is.  :)

Is this a problem with the program or do I need to try a reinstall? All other shields seem to be ok. sorry for the two post but the first one looked like it did not go through.

Open avast and under Real Time Shiels click on Script Shield and look at the bottom of the screen.

Also I am using IE 9, could that be causing a problem.

We were looking at the stats for the script shield, which just shows the graph and total for the week.

I got rid of WMP after using it to give the script shield a test run and reverted to winamp, which doesn't have anything like the same script activity. Mind you I have had a play with IE today when the forums were down trying to find if it were browser related so up at 22/0 for the day.

Weird just opened winamp and have Ride of the Valkyries playing to jump start the script shield and it didn't even scan one script ???

Did a clean install of 6.0.1091 from 5.0.899 after using the Uninstaller Tool on an XP-Pro with only MBAM free and OA disabled and had the BSOD on reboot.  Rebooted again in Safe Mode, then normal mode with OA in Learning Mode and registered, then updated definitions and all is working well.  Just a temporary glitch I guess.

Just try refreshing the google search, as with the previous pre-release version 6.0.1086 and webrep in FF4, I found that on the first search the icons were grey, refreshing the search showed the colours.

However it seems to be working first time, though it took a little time to go from all grey to coloured.

It may also just have been a period when the webrep servers weren't available.

I have the same problem with Youtube and Dailymotion, but I have Windows XP home edition SP3. I always had the problem with AVAST. But I just installed again the complete AVAST 6.0.1091 free edition and add the .dll files that pelochon wrote in the thread about the problem with WMP11 becoming red because of the script shield and youtube seems to be a little more slower. Until now I had this AVAST version but I uninstalled the script shield and Youtube worked as well as with the previous versions (so not perfectly but well), and with the script shield it seems to be a little slower.

Just after the problem with WMP11 red, I uninstalled AVAST and installed the trial version of the newest KASPERSKY version ... even if this antivirus is very heavy, youtube worked perfectly. I noticed when I checked my connection speed, with speedtest.fr, on firefox 3.6.16, I had approximately 9.5 Mbps. With AVAST (5 & 6), I find maximum 5.2 - 6 Mbps.

AVAST seems to have an impact on firefox, so on youtube ...

Now I am used to have this problem, I have to close firefox and open it again and I can watch 2-3 videos without problems.
With AVAST 6, it seems to be slower :(

Hi there!

What's going on with the Avast WebRep addon in Firefox 4?!

It tooks a long time to turn green for some days; or still green a lot of sites and in google search results. Rerefsh the results doesn't help.

Thanks!

There's a lot of bug with webrep since it was launched in Avast. :(

You can support avast! by buying their product!  ;) Otherwise, you should be patent!
I think there are more and more users of avast! 6 and the servers are more and more busy.

I'm little bit disappointed. Avast is more complex than before and there are more bug as well.
That's what I feel. Pros and cons.

I'm not thinking of buying Avast at this moment. :)

I like it, but there are some other good antivir products (free). Now, I've changed to AVG 2011 some of my PC and notebooks.

I'm not thinking about it at all. I like Avast, but I'm not a really fun. I like other antivir products. Pros and cons in other applications as well.

What is complex in Avast m8? Avast is so simple I really dont know what in Avast complex can be.
I use AVAST IS trial now and I have 12 days more left and only because I dont have money to buy I am forced to change, but I am very big fun of Avast!

It's not that complex but it is definitely more complex than v5 with the addition of the sandboxing and the web rep.

It's complex if you don't know how to handle it :) but avast! do many automatic jobs for your without bugging you. Anyway I think avast! should make their users more confident by providing more information about their new features. Unless newbies will get confused with their ignorance about new features.

Cheers...

Hi guys and girls!

Happy easter, happy bunny. :) Love girls! :D

For me complex I thought about that Avast 6 Free(!) offers more application itself than other free antivir products and the previous verios of Avast. For instance: Sandox(!); WebRep.

They are require more resources and effort. The more complex the more bugs. More pros and more cons. etc... But today Avast webrep working well. Nice! Keep going. :)))

Hi,

First off sorry for my broken English.

I have a question about latest program release.

I'm using Avast Free version 6.0.1091 - in the Community section of the program options there are two new settings.
Could you please describe briefly what these settings do?

One of the two should turn on/off the "Facebook" button as far as I know... while the other?

I use the Italian version so I'm not sure about the proper English translation for those settings - I have attached a screen dump for your convenience though.

Thank you very much in advance.

System Info:
- Win XP Pro SP3
- Avast Free version 6.0.1091

You can safely disable both. ;)

One removes the Like button from the avast user interface, the other removes the twitter logo from the alerts pop-ups.

Thanks a lot, DavidR.

Are you referring also to the "virus-def update" pop-ups?

I read about the twitter logo when I was looking for info before posting my question. So in the past days I checked both the community settings,  however it never showed up in the "virus-def update" pop-ups...

1. No, he isn't.
2. Twitter logo is only present, if you get a malware/virus warning.

Thank you so much for stress testing this build before release. It works flawlessly.

This fixed all the NetBios share (SMB) problems I was having with the 6.0.1000 build.

Well it becomes useless when avast block something when you have multiple tab opens like my Outpost Firewall blocks a connection to a website named gator.com when I browse this link

http://agnitumblog.blogspot.com/2011/04/outpost-75-release-candidate-is-re.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+AgnitumBlog+%28Agnitum+BLOG%29

But the page opens smoothly...That's how Web shield works when I was browsing a web page yesterday avast blocked a specific link which was no same to which I was browsing...

In short avast may block some link which is not the same which you are browsing and that's why we should know which link has been blocked just with a glance instead of clicking

What is "Antibanner" ?

If you mean blocking advertising: Firefox + Adblock Plus = perfect.
