Identify what s/w has been installed which I might have a problem re-installing.  Most things like browser, adobe, mysql etc should be easily re-installed.  I'm guessing you will be able to help me get back the avast licence etc.  The MAIN one here is MSOffice 2003 Professional.

To locate all product keys use the Magical Jelly Bean http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/

I have not been able to locate an ISO for office that I would trust  however, you may be able to replace it with LibreOffice http://www.libreoffice.org/download/

I will assist you in any way that I can

Hi I've just recovered to the original state of the m/c on C Drive and am running Windows Updates to bring the m/c up to speed.  However the next thing I want to do is re-install avast Internet Security which is what I purchased.  How do I do that and what info do you need from me to identify my licence details etc.

Thanks

Nexar

Download Avast from here
Version 7 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
Version 8 http://files.avast.com/test5beta/avast_internet_security_setup.exe (if you want to get it early )

I will post back in a bit with a link to get your licence

Thanks got the avast licence file.  Just waiting for the updates to finish.

I'll keep you informed of progress.

Thanks for all your help.  I'm starting to feel a lot better as i'll have a system that will have a clean starting point.

I must admit I am still bemused as to what happened

Leastwise it will perform a lot better with a clean install

I'm no expert but my guess is that when the WindowClean (can't remember it's real name) s/w hung it had already set in motion some stuff which never completed.  Yes I too hate not knowing why things happen.  Don't mind if they can't be resolved as long as there is a logical explanation of what happened.

Aah well it's still downloading SP3 at the moment.  I have some way to go before all the updates in.

Hmm but it all went pear shaped when I remove a proxy setting from Firefox, there is no way that I can see where removing a proxy affects the whole system

All this stuff is SOoo alien to me that I couldn't possibly comment.  Just wish all this wasted energy by people who write viruses could be channelled to better use...no double dip recession then eh?

Ok I've to the bare bones of a system going again.  I've got avast running and have managed to get Thunderbird working again (just).  Will try the rest tomorrow.

I'll give you a shout if I need any further help.

Thanks again for sticking by.

Not a problem, so far my research has turned up nothing - but I will keep looking as I hate not knowing

Hi Essexboy

Just to let you know that I've recovered 80% functionality on the m/c now.  Only MSOffice and an old version of MySQL left.  I've found the s/w for the latter so will be installing that today and then just waiting on the disk that I've ordered for MSO.

Thanks very much for all your help with this and apologies for having been short tempered half way through.  Silver lining is that the m/c does run faster now and I've taken the opportunity to clear out other crud.

Not a problem with the temper, although I have never experienced any malware problems with my systems.  Having helped many people get over this I do understand the frustration and anger that will appear, it is only natural.  It is just water off a ducks back for me and does no harm as I know where it derives from
