Update Error?
« on: January 15, 2005, 08:57:41 PM »
Hello, when I connect to the internet I get a popup that says something about not being able to update. Then I tried to download the update from the website, tried to install it but some kind of error popped up. Can anyone help me?

Make sure that you have set to use "no proxy" in the connection settings and that Avast is allowed correctly in your firewall rules.

Settings>Update>Details>Proxy.  Where?  I use IE6 with MSN, and have Zone Alarm Pro.  (Windows XP Home + SP2) If I look at Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections > Settings, the Proxy box is UNCHECKED.

I always get the error message "Cannot connect to download X.avast.com, where x changes from 1 to about 9.

Ideas?

Check the update settings in Avast at the location I mentioned in reply#3 in this thread.

Eddie and David,

Thanks for the info.  (Ed, the pictures are worth 1,000 words!).

I still had trouble until I totally disabled Zone Alarm.  The the update seemed to work, and the VRDB, too.

I restarted ZA, and everything still seems OK.

Is Avast! really this good?  How can they give it away?  I really only started to try it because I am having no end of trouble with Norton System Works 2005 Premier.  I'm thinking that I'll just use Norton SW for some housekeeping, and stick with Avast! for AV.

Thanks again for your help.

Vince

I am curious about the four-hour time difference between EST and the time shown on the posts.  Where does the forum originate?   Vince

Depends on how someone defines 'good'. Fact is that more and more people are using Avast and stay using it.

There are different ways to promote a product. Giving away a free version is just one of them. If people like the free version they tell others about it. More and more people are gonna use it and some (many?) of them will decide to get the paid version. (imo mout-to-mouth advertising is the best advertising there is)

NAV once was a real good av application (if it comes to detection it still is imo). But since version 2002 there is a significantly growing number of problems with it. (Slowing down systems, crashes etc.) So more and more people are getting tired of it and start looking for alternatives. As you can see on this (and other boards) more and more people are switching from NAV to Avast.

To Avast this is good. Not only is their product more used/sold, but there is also more feedback. Which gives them the oportunity to even solve any problems faster/better.

That isn't hard to find. It is right in their support section.

If you get a fast, accurate answer...... Well that is another thing ;)

The location is not relevant in the 24/7 world of the Internet. There are users all over the world and the idea is to set-up the time offset in your Profile settings (in the Look and Layout Preferences) so that the time you see relates to your local time, so that you see the posts in times relevant to your local time.

This board as well as Avast's website is hosted on servers in the US. (east coast I believe).
But as David pointed out, you can adjust the time that is displayed so that it will show your local time, if that is more conveniened to you.

Nice site with a lot of information about time:

Sorry Eddy can't be. My settings are at -6 if it was based on Eastern Standard time, then my settings should be -2. ;D

Just figure out the difference between your time and the repoted Board Time and then enter that number into the adjustment.
Don't forget to use either a + or a - depending on the difference.
Now Vince, you'll either understand this or I will have totally confused you. ;D
