Can't get Gmail after updating to 7.0.1474
« on: November 11, 2012, 06:48:30 PM »
I can't get Gmail after updating to 7.0.1474.  I made no other changes before or after updating and Outlook 07 and Gmail worked just fine.

The error is 0x80042108, can not connect.

I Googled the error and tried different Outlook settings but no luck. I would get different errors depending on which port numbers I tried.

Running Win 78 64 Pro and Windows firewall.

The settings that worked prior to the update were:
Incoming 110
Outgoing 587

What else can I try??

Please help...  I need this for my computer and my spouses...

thanks!  :)

Using a POP email provided is old school and not necessary now a days. Using web based email is far easier and safer. POP email such as Outlook via Office is good for businesses but home users its not needed.

There are email client programs that are much safer to use than any browser to read email via POP3 or IMAP.  They don't open attachments without the user explicitly doing so.  They also don't run (many don't have that capability built in) scripts nor any other active content, whereas browsers are designed to do so.

The biggest plus of an email client is that the addressbook and the message store is kept on the local machine.  I have messages from 1993 and earlier on my hard drive.  Since 1993, I've had 6 ISPs and 10 email service providers and never lost access to my messages.  2 of the free email service providers closed down, and everyone accessing them via a browser lost not only their messages but also their addressbook.

Stored on a local machine is not a benefit,Lol What happens why your HDD is fried or your pc just craps out. At leaat web based email can be accessed from ANY pc in the world or a smart phone.

That's why you do back-ups. Also with IMAP it is on your machine and also on the mail server.

GJ is right - accessing via an email client is safer than webmail against a variety of attack methods.

I'm not saying it doesn't present vulnerabilities to some others - we each make our choice, and that's fine.

I use an e-mail client.

But when your contacts are locked up at home and your smart phone battery is dying and you need to send or check an important email that so called email client is worthless. Web based email is fast, easy and convenient.

Thanks Pondus :)  I tried the ports in your link but it didn't work at first, then I noticed I didn't check the block for SSL.  I checked that and all is now good!

Again, thanks!

if you now get a pop up from avast saying it detected a SSL account that it can not scan...

you have two options.....as this is just a warning, you can ignore and turn off the avast pop up in avast SSL settings

or you can conficure avast to scan SSL accounts

OBS: Gmail have already scanned your account using postini spam/virus filter with two AV engines from Authentium and McAfee   ;)

It's not a "so called" email client.  It's a program that is an email client. :-*  With GMail, the message are left on the server even after retrieval via POP3 where they can be accessed via IMAP or the GMail web interface.  There's no downside.  I'd have thought you'd already know that, but obviously not. ::)

No pop ups or warnings from Avast.  I read your links but I’m not quite sure I understand.  I gather that Avast is using a “plug-in” now instead of scanning directly, but I don’t know what that means: are my emails still being scanned?  I have other SSL accounts other than Gmail, are they being scanned?

If I delete all the SSL accounts in Avast, will it rebuild any that I need?      Sorry… this is just a bit scary…
