4 days and 50 views later no response ? Is this the best support Avast can offer ?

Hello and welcome to the Forum! :)

You could try a clean install with the new version 2014: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=136785.0

DJBone
Win10 x64, AIS 20.1.2397
Avast Mobile Security (always latest version)

Just tried it before even seeing your response. Still got the same message during setup and also during boot-up (five popups), which took considerably longer than usual. Web browser has now slowed to a near-freeze, Skype gets so bogged down that voice breaks up and cannot hang up or close it.

Tries to run chkdsk, computer justs shuts off at around 10-15%. Windows startup repair also cannot complete, machine just shuts off. Can still start Windows normally, but get the above described behaviour.

There may well be an underlying hardware problem

Never had any other AV on this machine, as stated in my original message. It must be a hell of a coincidence for a hardware problem to manifest itself upon upgrading Avast to 8.0.1497.

I have tried to erase all traces of Avast with the cleaner in Safe mode, but still get the same five error popups during boot-up and also noticed that Avast still creates a log under Program data. Where else can I look for remains of Avast, there is nothing left under Program files ?

Uninstall Avast and then use Rejzor's cleanup tool from here http://my.opera.com/rejzor/blog/2013/02/01/avast-cleanup-tool

If you get the errors again we may need to use the MSI cleanup tool

Uninstalled from Control Panel, ran the suggested cleaner, rebooted machine, boot-up still takes close to 5 minutes and I get the 5 error popups. MSI cleanup tool ?

Avast not showing up in the list of programs I cannot uninstall. When I select Not listed it asks for 38-character product code in order to continue. Where do I find that ?

Meanwhile I am still getting the Avast warning popup each time I open a new website for the first time - and it's supposedly uninstalled and cleaned out.

Lets have a look at the system

Download OTL  to your Desktop
Secondary link
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.

  • Select All Users
  • Select LOP and Purity
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
netsvcs
BASESERVICES
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
c:\program files (x86)\Google\Desktop
c:\program files\Google\Desktop
dir "%systemdrive%\*" /S /A:L /C
CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Attach  both logs

I could see just one folder remaining and no uninstall information.  I will remove the folder and do a reg search

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Code: [Select]
:Commands
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]

:OTL
[2013/10/15 20:49:20 | 000,000,000 | ---D | C] -- C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software

:Commands
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.
THEN

For 32bit systems, please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

For 64bit systems, download SystemLook from here.

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
Code: [Select]
:regfind
avast
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

All I want at this stage is too make sure I have removed completely any traces of Avast so that I will not encounter any issues when installing another AVP instead.
