OK these are the steps and results:

1.  Went to uninstall FF.  Add/Remove Programs window from Control Panel came but but nothing got populated so I couldn't uninstall it.

2. Started in safe mode and uninstalled FF including all personal settings.

3.  Downloaded FF installer using IE whilst in safe mode.

4.  Restarted in normal mode and installed FF.

Now FF window starts but then hangs.  I cant put in any web address.  If I mouse over the window the hour glass appears.

I also opened Add/Remove Programs and then clicked on Add/Remove Windows components.  A small pop up appeared saying Please Wait and that was it.  I had to reboot.

Would you know where I can buy a set of XP programs so that I can try and do a repair?  This m/c came with XP installed and although there probably was a Recovery disk I can't find it now.

Of course any alternative suggestions gratefully accepted as well.

This is not making sense as the only element removed prior to this was a proxy setting which should in no way affect the system or the running of programmes

OK we need to make some space on the drive so that we can defragment the drive

Quote
Drive C: | 27.95 Gb Total Space | 1.30 Gb Free Space | 4.66% Space Free | Partition Type: NTFS
Drive D: | 39.60 Gb Total Space | 1.34 Gb Free Space | 3.39% Space Free | Partition Type: NTFS

The ideal would be to lose at least 3Gb from the c drive are you able to do that ?

OK I'll get on to it straight away.  Get back to you when it's done.

I did not notice the shortage of space initially as I am getting used to working on 500Gb drives rather than 30Gb drives.  With XP you do get a lot of disc swapping, and as the drive space reduces then it gets harder to do that and starts using the RAM more heavily

Yeah I know this is an old m/c.  Does your comment mean that you want me to do something different than clear out space on the C:\ drive?

Once we have cleared some space then windows will be able to use the paging file rather than try to keep everything in memory as it is at the moment.  Then we will run a disc defrag to tidy up the drive and maybe that will clear a bit more space

OK I've got 3.45Gb free on C drive now.  The problem is that most of the useage is either in Documents and Settings 3Gb, Program Files 7Gb or WINDOWS 11.5GB folders.  I've looked through Docs and Settings and most of that seems like system related stuff (to my untrained eye).  Apart from the above the only other large enough thing is a 1.6Gb pagefile.sys.  So I don't know what else to take off.

If you are OK with this then I'll start the defrag.

We can clear restore points which may well remove some more.  Once this has run then defragment the main drive

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    Quote
    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
     [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Aaargh!! I keep forgetting that OTL hangs in normal mode.  I had to restart it in Safe Mode.  Right now the defragmenter is analysing the C drive. (65%) done.

Do I need to take a backup or checkpoint or anything before I start defragmenting?  Almost all my DATA is on D: drive so only system and program stuff on C.

No with defrag there is no need

Once that has completed let me know how normal mode is behaving

The 3.45Gb free space went up to 5.08Gb after the OTL fix.  Now running defrag but likely will take all night.  I'll let you know once completed.

Thanks

Ah well as long as it all bounces back then that will be fine.  I can't really see much space being released from the defrag though.

Will let you know what transpires.

Thanks for all your help

The defrag took ages to get to about 20% and then just wizzed through.  There was no measurable improvement in disk space.....and unfortunately in 'normal' mode FF doesn't work.

The FF window opens and then hangs.

Gutted!

Does IE work in  normal mode.. And has the responsiveness improved ?
