Sorry that you're having a problem but, I've found the latest version stable and problem free.
I also don't see a rash of reports here on the forum from other users with a similar problem.
Maybe the problem isn't avast! related?

And for those who still use 4.1, time to dump it and step into the 21st century ;)

Why not try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, avast! Anti-Virus, Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.

It can't hurt.

Hey Dave, I noticed you also expressed your concern about auto-update issue you had a while ago. I will try to do that. Hopofully I will get a postive result. Thanks.
