The poll is missing a choice:

"I don't like the new version. Where can I get the download links for V4?"

V4 was the last great version, light, effective, only few bugs.

Hi Skakara,

I agree that avast! 4 was good. I used it myself back in 2009, so I can relate.

I've never experienced with Windows 7/8 or avast! 5/6/7/8, so I cannot argue with you.

But judging from the forums, many like the new avast! antivirus.

As I already wrote, Avast-8 has injured my PC stronger as a virus!

The following has happened.
I successfully worked March 15. At evening I run Avast, it worked 3,5 hours (so long!) and determined a virus.  Then it asked to restart PC and was "clearing" my PC about 6 hours again (why does it do this again, and does it take so long?), with a blue screen. When I came to my work finally back, I found many my settings to be lost!!!

Many programs were deleted,  besides, I lost all my post in the MS OutlookExpress!! My settings for Outlook and Skype were lost as well so that I need to recall all their passwords now...

The Avast Team, who is to recover my time wasted?
Are you going to improve your version 8?

Unfortunately complaining without knowing what actually caused the problem is meaningless.

This new version starts scanning my disks every time I boot my PC.
You can't even disable this bullshit auto-scan. Every time it enables itself again !
It's wearing out my disks and after 10 years of AVAST I'm gonna look for an alternative.

I stopped using Digsby for the same reason. It scans your whole fucking disk every time you boot up because "the version is out of date".

This soft used to be good...

It's possible/probable that the "Software Updater" is scanning on Boot up.
Take a look at Post #301 and 302 that might help?? :)

Well the whole point of a resident anti-virus is to scan files as they are accessed and especially executed, which is going to happen during boot. If you have lots of programs run on boot, this will have an impact as avast will scan the files that are executed. It seems every program wants to be run on startup, when most don't need it at all until they are going to be used (media players are a particular instance).

I don't think there would be that much disk activity as a result of the software updater as the list of programs it limited, you only have to look at the programs you have in the software updater to see that. First the software updater database would need updating (included in the virus definitions update) and then compare against those limited programs being monitored.

####
However, I would say this is also likely to the virus definitions check & update, this happens very soon after boot and if you have switched it off overnight then there is almost certain to be an update available. This contributes to resource use (and hard drive activity), though the auto update is meant to be restricted.

The other area is the Streaming updates as they too occur very early on in the boot process, you only need to look at the defs sub-folder to see if there is a 13032500_stream sub-folder and you will see the creation time of that folder and its contents have occurred shortly after boot.

avast! is low on system resources which doesn't mean that it doesn't use any.
It is lower than any other AV that I've used and tested which is why I'm still using it.
No program that scans your files for whatever reason has ever accomplished it's task without
affecting your system.
There is always a trade off. You also need to remember that avast! isn't the only program that uses
system resources when your system starts.
The OS uses quite a bit as do all those programs which look for updates and if you have other
security programs installed, they also check for updates and do some scanning.
It's up to the user to make sure that only those items that absolutely need to be there at the start
are actually given permission to do their job.
All others could be delayed to alleviate some of the burden placed on the system at startup.

By the sound of this its YOU that has ruined your computer.Maybe you need to evaluate your computer usage skills before blaming avast.

You need to uninstall it .. See here http://youtu.be/SV0RudVXY8M

Should be an option when installing it rather than hiding it in the uninstall menu.

Thanks for this post it fixes my problem with V8...

If you had used the custom install, you would have been able to deselect that option prior to installing avast!8

hello,
Isn't it possible in the future when avast does a big change (like v7=>v8) to prevent update and force a clean install ?
Some log work already like this and I'm sure It will be less post like we can see last weeks here and less (false) unhappies...

Lots of people can not get it to work with vista 64.

see
Windows Vista 64bit freezes at the progress bar Avast 8 Final
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=116309.60

Can anyone get it to work with vista 64?
I have vista ultimate 64.

I have downgraded to avast 7.

I have always like avast but it does not seem to work on vista ultimate 64.
