I tred to get this resolved through tech support via email, and the person on the other end literally said he gave up.

I've been using avast for some time now which has automatically updated ok but today I got the "cannot connect to server" message  when avast popped up box from systray saying a new version was available which I duly clicked on.

Here's tail end of my log:

23.04.2005 10:59:17 package: ERROR:HttpGetWinsock, WinsockTcpConnect() returned 0x0000274C

23.04.2005 10:59:17 general: Err:Cannot connect to download11.avast.com (67.15.38.62:80).

I am using a laptop with Windows XPHome with SP2. My (broadband) internet connection was up and running with Outlook Express and Firefox open and working. I checked my firewall (Sygate) was allowing avast applications (ok) and even tried with Sygate set to "allow all" which didn't help. I searched these forums for ideas and found a good few posts searching on the word "connect" with "server"
I tried most ideas that didn't involve uninstalling either avast or firewall but to no avail. I was able to ping  download11.avast.com by name or address.

I was about to give up and post a message on these forums when I thought I would try closing everything and rebooting my laptop first.

Shortly after reboot an avast message box said my operating system needed restarting so I restarted again. [Not sure, but there may also have been one messsage at this stage, from Sygate, about a DLL (avast related) having changed. As I say, not sure of this]

After this restart I began to get the usual Sygate messages about updated avast related things "do you want to allow access", which always happens after avast program updates so I assume all is ok now.

If I click "About avast!.." I'm now showing Build: Apr2005 (4.6.652) and I think it was Build: Mar2005 before. If I try a manual update now I get the following summary:

Information about current update:
Total time: 4 s

- Program: Already up to date
  (current version 4.6.652)
- Vps: Already up to date
  (current version 0516-7)

Server: download12.avast.com (67.19.134.114:80)
Downloaded files: 3 (0.03 KB)

If anyone gets "cannot connect to server" on a system which normally updates ok  it may be worth restarting their machine before tinkering with anything else.

I am worried that there is spyware or virus that is messing up with our connection and update and can't detect. Because my sister computer also experience this as well as my computer. Internet surfing and downloading also slow down. My sister don't have any firewall. When my sister computer (Window 2000 pro, dial up and only have spyware blaster, avast antivirus, adware and spybot search and destory) and my computer always not responding when trying to change the update(basic) and adware update always has error. The test connection always say it is correct. When my sister computer go to the webpage of avast error message will pop up and can't get in. And will disconnect by itself and connect by itself. The red box will appear during connection, or after disconnect. I don't know what wrong? I am not very sure. Is there system program incompatility or corrupted?

Just had a look on internet and found a program called Winsock XP fix and wonder if it might cure the seemingly insolvable problem you are having. Seems to have helped some people with different degrees of internet connection problems. (see the 38 user opinions, mostly favourable).

Although the site says "Added Nov 07 2003" people seem to be using it recently,

What is your firewall?
Does it allow access for avast.setup?

I know you have no problems with your internet connection.

I mentioned  the program because (looking at the 4th user review, Ken Stock) he seemed to have problems with particular pages which I assumed might imply his internet connection was generally ok (like you). I just wondered if a particular registry corruption could be causing you to have a problem connecting to avast for download.

Actually, having just re-read his review he seems to think it works for Win98SE too.

I did, I missed it, simple as that, which I would have thought was obvious.

Rather than waste your time with the "do i really need to repeat this again?" comment and simply left out that line (as a sarcastic comment it doesn't contribute anything helpful).

So as I said bye ::), I won't waste any more of my time or yours.

my whole experience with tech support has been a waste of time. no one can figure out what's wrong, the person trying to fix it via email flat out gave up

It worked, then it doesn't work. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, I've played with all the settings I've been instructed to play with. It still doesn't work.
