Today when waking up my PC, Avast indicated a new search engine profile needed to be updated, and that after I would have to restart my PC. This was different than the usual green box in the lower right pop up and verbal "Avast has been updated" After a restart I had NO INTERNET CONNECTION. I opened avast and it said I had "0" days left on my subscription. I have about 1 year left. I tried to uninstall Avast from the control panel, but apparently you can't do this, you have to use the avast clear tool. I chose did a Restore Point to right before the Avast 2014 update and was able to connect to the internet again, BUT, Avast was not operational and would not accept my license key. After an hour and a half with Avast Tech Support, they indicated there must be a problem with my PC and that they could offer a $179 service to fix my PC. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? I'd rather download an alternative internet security trial and see if that would work first, seeing as I had NO PROBLEMS for 4 years with Avast until today's 2014 update. My feeling is there is is a bu or incompatibility with the new update and some computers. I chose an earlier restore point, a week ago, and was able to connect to the internet. The Avast popped up again saying I had "0" days left on my subscription and I clicked the RED renew box, avast entered a "not responding" mode. I used the End Task from the Task Manager, and doing so somehow, the avast started responding. I them went to subscription and used browse to enter my license key and it accepted my key. So, my system has started operating properly again and I didn't have to pay $179 for a service which I would have expected for free since the problem only occurred during the 2014 update. Something definitely happened during the update and restart the first time which did not allow me to connect to the internet. Not so sure that it was my PC, which the tech support person said was the case 99.9% of the time.
