The updates are spread around to lighten server load.
Don't worry you'll get them.

And those versions (7,8 and new 2014) have differnet cores or why is the update cycle different?

The avast 2014 9.0.x has an optimised virus definitions database, which differs from that used in avast 5, 6, 7 & 8.

I'm aware of that.  However, when there were problems with streaming updates for a while some time ago, that was not the issue.  There were actual server problems to the point that some weren't receiving streaming updates for several days.  This usually occurred on the weekends.  No problem now since the server issues have been fixed for quite a while.
