internet timeout

Hi,

I've been using Avast! for over a year now and I really like it :D. But since the last couple of days I've been getting this message:
Internet connection timeout elapsed. Continue waiting?
What does this mean? and how do I solve this?

I know there already exist topics about this subject, so I'm sorry to bother you with this again, but they didn't help me very much. I'm not good at this tech stuff  :-[
Your help will be very much appreciated.
I'm using Avast v.4.6 and WinXP. I connect to the internet via LAN. For protection against ad- and spyware I use Hitman pro.
