Thanks for the info, Bob. Before readings this, I tried doing the 8.1 upgrade again, it still didn't work so I reluctantly updated the card reader driver through Windows and all that did was start this hard disk light flashing constantly again. Tried the upgrade and it still failed.  I might end up having to clean install from the disc again trying the method the guy from Microsoft Answers used before trying the upgrade again which would obviously be very time consuming. However, I'm beginning to think that this upgrade issue isn't related to the card reader so I might try a chkdsk repair before trying the upgrade again. Is it an option to just stick with Windows 8 with all the Windows 8 updates and forget the 8.1 upgrade or is it a security risk due to it not being the most up to date version?

Have you tried using the free version of Driver Booster Free
I've found it to do an excellent job and have never had a problem with incorrect drivers.
They do try to get you to download some of their other products which I don't use or recommend.
Make sure that you use the Custom Install and uncheck those items that you don't want installed.

I've found it to do an excellent job and have never had a problem with incorrect drivers.
They do try to get you to download some of their other products which I don't use or recommend.
Make sure that you use the Custom Install and uncheck those items that you don't want installed.

Bob, just tried Driver Booster and attempted another 8.1 update, unfortunately it still didn't work, thanks anyway though. Just thought I'd let you know that when I was installing Driver Booster, after I chose custom install, my Malwarebytes Premium detected malware. Seeing as I had just clean installed Windows 8 after deleting all partitions on my drive, it must have detected it from the Driver Booster installation (I've attached the log to this post). I know you are trustworthy and wouldn't recommend a product unless you knew it was legitimate so I continued with the installation anyway and it did find a lot of out of date drivers but even after updating them, Windows 8.1 still didn't install. I've just decided to give up now and stick on Windows 8, hopefully if they do a Windows 8.2 in future, it'll let me update straight to that.



Also, thanks to essexboy for helping me work out it was the card reader causing the flashing light.

I would suggest that you install 8 and get all the updates, wait until after next months updates and try 8.1 again

If you do a google search, you'll find a long standing dispute between the two companies.
Iobit was once accused (Rightfully so IMHO) of stealing VPS data from Malwarebytes.
The program however is safe and doesn't contain any malware.
I use it because it does it's job but, you need to exercise caution not to install PUP's during the install process.
