I believe this may be an error in the start key where it is missing the /nogui command at the end

I agree. Why call in the bulldozer when at this time, all you need is a duster. :)

Ah, but  what's the duster?

How do you have avast check files that you download ?

This should happen automatically (without having to do the above) as the web shield should scan files being downloaded.

In Avast I go to settings/active protection/mail settings and click on scan inbound mail (POP 3, IMAP4)

That setting will have no impact on scanning files that are downloaded from your web browser (that should be being done already as mentioned in my Reply #12), it certainly isn't the cause of the UI opening.

Essexboy is most likely correct that the /nogui (don't display the user interface) element being missing from the avastUI.exe command on startup. I'm surprised that a Repair didn't resolve that.

Bob, my goal was to attempt to see the run key for Avast!. Essexboy, being the Fixer Upper, indicated the /nogui thing. A FRST scan would show it.

The FRST scan was an attempt to have someone who probably isn't familiar with the Registry avoid the dangers of it...

We can try this if you like. (Note: aswClear is clickable text and will take you to a direct download for it from Avast!'s site)

  • Please download aswClear and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double Click the Icon ()
  • It'll boot into safe Mode automatically once given permission
  • If you installed Avast in a different folder than the default, browse for it. (Note: Be careful! The content of any folder you choose will be deleted!)
  • Click REMOVE
  • Restart your computer Restart.

If it's still not functional, please say so. I still have 2 more tricks. The last being absolute last resort, the other, Essex will have to do since I don't have the expertise to administer it...

Sorry but your post wasn't specific - just giving the link and a user going there sees all of the stuff there and it is daunting, hence the OPs comment:

Henry, can you see my instructions in reply #3 the word "this" is clickable.

I did see it but I'm not smart enough to do all that.  I did run free MalwareBytes and that didn't help.

Sorry David. I'm used to just doing it myself with basic instructions like that.

I shall review my other post with Avast! Clear and post Specific instructions here soon...

Avast Clear no longer requires that you boot into safe mode and then run it.
It only requires that you run it in regular mode and then allow it to do it's job in safe mode. :)
Once you give it permission, Avast Clear will reboot the system into Safe Mode and do it's job.
Rebooting after the job is finished is required.

Same thing Bob. Just going off the directions given by Avast.
Their directions are still incorrect. They haven't updated those directions to the current capabilities of the Avast Removal Tool. :)
Running the program in regular mode and allowing it to reboot into safe mode is not the same thing  as booting into Safe Mode first and then running the program.

Can I just add /nogui to the startup for Avast and if so where and how do I add it please?
