Avast Causing Windows 10 to not start
« on: September 30, 2015, 01:41:39 AM »
Something isn't quite right with Avast and windows 10.

Firstly, let me say that I'm a fan of Avast, hence why I use it and recommend it to everyone...so i'm not here to trash Avast...but I don't think this is a Windows10 issue either.

I had 8.1 with Avast and I upgrade to 10. Everything was fine in that transition.

I had a issue another issue and ended up having to refresh my Windows10 (losing all apps, keeping files, reinstall of the OS)

that was fine...

But as soon as I install Avast (free), my computer no longer even starts! I can't do a restore, I can't do start up repair, I can't get into safe mode...Nothing!

It took me about 4 refreshes of Windows10 before I figured out that it was avast.

When I install it, it finishes, but then reports that it couldn't start a the background service.
checking the service, the Background service is there, start up type "automatic" but it's not running and cannot be started because of the dependencies fail to start.

I figure, restart the computer might work...and bammo... computer will not start up anymore. As I said, this has happened 5 times now (the fifth time was confirm for me that it was avast)

I even just now tried to install the 10.4.2233 and that wont even install

Any insight is greatly appreciated. I would really like to continue to use Avast. Everything else with windows is working perfectly fine...

This is my hardware if it makes a difference
Windows 10 Pro
Asus Z87-Pro
i7-4770
EVGA 790
8gb of Ram
1 intel SSD
1 Samsung SSD
2 HDD
BD-Burner

start up repair fails. Tried that...each time
Restore to a previous restore point fails
Safemode doesn't start  > just restarts the computer (goes back to BIOS POST)...
Even the option to start up with early Antivirus disabled...doesn't work.
computer just restarts and goes to repair options. The only thing that has worked is a refresh of the computer...

oh I get you...

But I can't get into windows at all after I install Avast. I can't even get into safe mode.

Should the repair be tried immediately after the install...before restarting?

is there some kind of log I can post from the install? Because once I install it and restart, I can't get back into windows at all to get any logs...

Avast Free - the latest version available 10.4.2233.1299
Windows 10 64 bit pro
No other security software (as stated, this is happening on completely refreshed windows 10 installation)
I've been using avast for years! It was on the computer for the 8.1>10 upgrade and was fine. This issue didn't start till after I refreshed windows and try to reinstall avast

Which version of windows10pro?Did you use the Avast Uninstall Utility / did a clean install the right way ?

Download the Avast Uninstall Utility to your desktop.http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Download the  Avast.
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe

Disconnect from the internet.

Run the Uninstall Utility and accept the reboot to safe mode.
Once complete reboot your system.
Reinstall Avast.

If you have the option to start your computer with not verifying digital signatures, I think it will boot up. I had the same problem yesterday and was able to identify it as an Avast driver that the digital signature couldn't be verified. Restarting without verifying digital signatures is one of the options in the menu that also has the command for safe mode.

I have a thread about the specific file involved - I'd be curious to know if running without verifying digital signatures solves the problem for you as well. (It's a temporary fix because the next re-start the problem is back and you have to go in to the menu and re-select the option. I had to remove Avast until there's a solution.)

I appreciate the suggestion. After the cleaner didn't work...it just wasn't worth it to me to have to refresh my computer again and again.
I never tried the digital signatures option, but the disable antivirus option definitely did not work.

I just decided to do a clean install. Fortunately, that worked. So something about the refreshed W10 isnt' right..but the upgraded and clean installs are fine.... oh well...

thanks for the support guys

Sorry to revive this thread, but I'm having the same problem as OP.

Just to clarify, by "clean install" did you mean simply reinstalled Windows 10 while erasing all your files or did you restore your PC to factory settings?
If you mean reinstalled Windows 10 while erasing files, that's what I did just last night but ended up with the same problem. And just like you I was using Avast on Windows 10 before attempting the reset.
A while ago I had a similar problem (got stuck on repair options) after I made the not very wise decision of messing with the registry despite not knowing anything about how it works.
Before I try a factory reset I'd like to know if it's possible that Avast is screwing up my registry.

I first installed Avast Premier (same one I used before) version 11.1.2241.1482. After the 3rd refresh I tried Avast Free (11.1.2241), same problem.

When I try to start the service through "view local services" I get error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

I'm running Windows 10 Home 64x.

Thanks in advance for any help.

How did you change over to Avast Free ???
What did you mess up in the registry and could that be your problem ???
Maybe you need to do a clean (fresh, new) install of Windows 10. ???

I installed Avast Free after one of the system refreshes.
I can't remember exactly what I did to the registry, I was trying to uninstall this piece of software that had something to do with internet banking and was making my pc really slow and got stuck in the start up repair thing. But that was 10 months ago and I simply did a system refresh and all was good again.
A clean install of Windows 10 was what I did in the first place and all of the sudden this mess started. My only other option here is to reset the pc to factory settings, which means going back to Windows 8 and updating to Windows 10 later.

You can use the  Media Creation Tool and burn a DVD or USB drive and install a fresh version of Windows 10.
