Microsoft pulls Windows RT 8.1 update from website and store
http://www.news.com.au/technology/microsoft-pulls-windows-rt-81-update-from-website-and-store/story-fnjwvnxq-1226743645818
The RT version is used by a relatively small percentage of Windows 8 users.
The average Windows 8 update to version 8.1 is not effected.
It hasn't been pulled but it is not without problems of it's own. The regular 8 to 8.1 update is destroying registry entries of some programs and preventing them from working.

'In denial' XP users left vulnerable as Microsoft logs off'

Sorry but we've all know about the end of support for XP for a long time.
Microsoft isn't abandoning it's users. It's time to buy a new car.... Nothing lasts forever. :)

This may explain some of the issues on here concerning avast 9.
Windows xp seems to be the common denominator.

Not really since there are many XP users who haven't had any problems updating to avast! 2014.
I've updated many at our senior center without incident. :) (I guess you may also call Windows XP a senior... :) )

This may well be related to those who have not just XP but have MS Office installed on XP, this has Alternative User Input enabled, which has/requires ctfmon.exe running. For those who have tried disabling this disabling/uninstall Alternative User Input and turn off 'advanced text services.' removing ctfmon.exe entries in registry, etc. may have resolved the problem. Though it will take time to ensure any consistency in shutdown without being slow or stalled.

These measures (manually editing the registry and or disabling services) to resolve this problem really shouldn't have to be done at user level.  Not to mention some can't do this as they may require the Alternative User Input and 'advanced text services.'

You have a point but many people keep, maintain, or restore old cars simply because they like them.

They also eventually have to make their own parts since they are no longer available from the dealer. :)

We all know when it comes to computer programs, The "junk yard" isn't always the safest place. :)

Exactly, and that's why the old car analogy wasn't the best one to use.

I guess we don't speak the same language since you seem to interpret my analogy differently that I intended it
to be understood. :)

Which brings up an interesting point:  Obsolete/unsupported programs have no business running on a modern supported system (think junkyard) as they can constitute genuine and real security risks.  If one wishes to run an obsolete program, they can, but there are unknown risks in doing so.  @ Bob:  I understood your analogy perfectly, and was responding tongue-in-cheek to that analogy.  No offense meant, and hopefully, none was taken.

A new look at an old and trusted tool - A great collection of many useful tools.
More information.       Download Page.
(The password recovery tools have been known to trigger AV programs. It's a false positive.)
