This may explain some of the issues on here concerning avast 9.
Windows xp seems to be the common denominator.
Not really since there are many XP users who haven't had any problems updating to avast! 2014.
I've updated many at our senior center without incident. (I guess you may also call Windows XP a senior... )
This may well be related to those who have not just XP but have MS Office installed on XP, this has Alternative User Input enabled, which has/requires ctfmon.exe running. For those who have tried disabling this disabling/uninstall Alternative User Input and turn off 'advanced text services.' removing ctfmon.exe entries in registry, etc. may have resolved the problem. Though it will take time to ensure any consistency in shutdown without being slow or stalled.
These measures (manually editing the registry and or disabling services) to resolve this problem really shouldn't have to be done at user level. Not to mention some can't do this as they may require the Alternative User Input and 'advanced text services.'
