Star Wars Episode IV — in ASCII text Darth Vader intercepts Princess Leia, who jettisons the Death Star plans, which...
The animation is absorbing — but it's all rendered using ASCII text!
This hilarious retelling of Star Wars Episode IV (the "first" in the series) is by Simon Jansen,
a New Zealand programmer with way too much time on his hands.
He provides a Java version of the movie at his site, ASCIImation.co.nz.
But more interesting is the version that draws the movie in a DOS window on your screen using telnet.
To try this yourself, open a command window. (Start, Run, cmd, Enter.)
At the prompt, type
telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl and press Enter.
After a delay, the ASCII animation starts rolling. (Please be patient.)
The movie is by no means finished, but you may not care because you'll be rolling on the floor, laughing.
